Selecting audio output

Vegas never seems to "know" my audio devices. On playback, audio frequently is not audible. If I open audio playback devices on my (Win 7) computer, it shows 4 different devices, and even shows meter activity from Vegas on one, but it is not my default device. If I try to select a different output device on Vegas it will only show one choice and offers no way to select another--the one my computer is defaulted to!

Any ideas?! Thanks!

Is one of your devices connected by HDMI - for example a TV? HDMI takes over my audio outputs (Win 7) and plays everything through the TV's speakers.

Yes, one is HDMI, but default is USB (I have external USB mixer for audio in and out) and it works fine for everything else. Vegas only lists the computer's built in audio as an option, but audio comes from the laptop's speakers only now and then, no matter what the default output is!

Sounds like the driver software for you USB interface may be deficient, else it should be showing as a option in Vegas preferences 'Audio Devices'. It may have a vague name.

What happens if in Vegas you select Microsoft Sound Mapper ( the default Win 'device') as the default device, and in the WIndows Control Panel ' Sound and Audio Devices' set that pointing to your USB interface ?

Alternatively you could install the universal 'ASIO4ALL' driver and configure that for your USB interface.

Interesting thoughts....thanks for taking the time! The interesting thing is that the USB audio CODEC is actually listed in Vegas' Audio Device preferences setting, and it is selected as the default recording and playback device. However, in a Vegas project when you look at the audio out options for an audio track, it shows Realtek High Def (computer's built in sound) as the selected audio device and there are no other options shown available. And it does not play through the USB device. Am I missing something?!!

As I mentioned, other apps use the USB audio fine. If I render a Vegas project and play back, for instance, an mp4 video file, the audio plays correctly through the USB interface.

If you have an external audio device then you shouldn't need the onboard sound and it should be disabled.

1- that doesn't solve the matter of Vegas not recognizing an installed audio device.

2- this is a laptop, when removed from my studio set-up, I need the built in sound device

Where are you looking for Vegas' audio options? If only at the output Bus mapping, (the "box" icon in the track header) you will only see options available from the selection you have made in Vegas' Options>Preferences>Audio device. If your USB device isn't available there (in Preferences>Audio device) then Geoff Woods suggestions should work. Either select Microsoft Sound Mapper and change your Windows audio device settings to make your USB the default output, or try ASIO4all.
