Selecting Part of an Image for Color Grading

Hi all,

I've been watching the Lord of the Rings appendices that come with the extended versions, and found it funny that they talk of color grading as some new and wonderful technology. (Which I guess it was--they also spoke of having a terabyte and a half of storage as being a huge feat as well). But anyway, I did find interesting that they were able to select a precise part of the image (e.g., Aragorn's eyes) for color grading without effecting the rest of the picture. Are you able to do the same thing in Sony Movie Studio? I'm editing a movie right now and would love to have the feature of color grading (or lightening, heightening contrast, etc.) part of an image without affecting the rest of it. If you can do it, does anyone know how?

Thanks.

You want to use Sony Color Corrector (Secondary) FX. That will allow you to select part of an image and have color correct only affect that area.

If you are serious about working with color you might want to download the free version of Resolve. It takes a little getting used to, but it gives you several orders of magnitude better color control than MS. The present version of Resolve is 12, but 11 is easier to learn and use, and takes much less computer power. Version 12 is a full-featured editor while version 11 is more of a specialty tool.

Hope this helps.

If you want to track and mask the eyes for color grading, you can use fusion for tracking the eyes, and then send to resolve for color grading. Vegas can't track, you would have to move your mask frame by frame.
