Selective prerendering question

I'm trying to put together a video from some bits and pieces, a background and an overlay and some music. When I try to preview to see how things are looking, it is slow, jerky and innaccurate (not following the cursor).

So I tried this selective prerendering, but WHEW, it takes forever. Far longer than an actual final render.

Am I misunderstanding what this is for? Does anyone else experience problems with the preview? Does the program do any background rendering at all?

As far as I know VMS does not prerender in the background while you are editing.
There is no obvious reason why selective rendering takes longer. The rendering time however depends on the material, the transitions, Pan and crop, the chosen Video FX (like color balancing etc) - and if you just prerender a piece of the timeline, that is more complicated than the whole video in average, then the prerender time for this piece will be longer than expected.
However the jerking and stuttering of the preview can be minimized: if you reduce the preview quality - there is a table just over the preview window where you can set the quality to "draft" or "preview".
You may also reduce the size of the preview window - as a smaller size means less load on the CPU. This can be done by selecting and dragging the frame over- or to the left- of the preview window.

I'm not sure I understand why VMS doesn't do background rendering, but so be it. I think it makes it very hard to edit without being able to see what it looks like. I have draft or preview chosen, and my preview window is small.

I guess I'm used to Studio prerendering in the background. Oh, well, I guess I will get used to it.

You can ewnlarge the previer by clicking on the edge of the previewer and draging it up/down Left/right. fishbelt.
