Semi OT - hosting risque content

Ethan Winer wrote on 11/17/2008, 11:34 AM
I'm almost done with what I believe will be the world's first R-rated acoustics tutorial. I'm doing it half as a gag, and half as a public service to audio nerds everywhere. There's no sex, but it contains full (female) nudity. So where to host it?

I know there are porn sites, but this is not porn and I'd rather not be associated with places like that. Vimeo claims "Non-sexual nudity is okay." Since I'm a paying member there I emailed to ask their position, but they said they have to see it. Makes sense. But I'm still a few days way from completion.

I'm hoping they'll approve and that will be the end of it. In the mean time, does anyone here know of any other "classy" video hosting sites that accept non-sexual nudity?

Thanks.

I've used Lunarpages (lunarpages.com) for years. They are very price competitive and have awesome customer service. Here is their faq on adult sites:

Will you host adult sites?
Yes, we do allow adult sites to be hosted here. Lunarpages has no restrictions upon content of your website as long as it is legal as defined by California law.

However, adult sites that require extreme amounts of server resources and bandwidth will not be accepted.

Please thoroughly read our "Terms of Service", http://www.lunarpages.com/legal.htm

We allow all kinds of adult sites except, free tgp (thumbnail gallery posts), circular pop up sites and free image galleries. Other than that, feel free to be as adult as you can be under the law of California.

So, what you're trying to do shouldn't be a problem at all.

My reply was going to be to simply host the content yourself. And as a long time Lunarpages customer I can second Mekelly's suggestion that you give them a try. Of course you'll need to come up with your own flash player or other method for streaming video. that's not so hard to do but what I'm looking for is a way to provide a simple commenting application that would give users a youtube or vimeo style method for feedback. If anyone know of such a thing, please chime in.

I second the Lunarpages recommendation. Absolutely amazing support, best I've ever seen.

I'll host it! I love good, wholesome smut.

As long as you created it yourself and it doesn't cross that line between nudity and porn you can host it on Vimeo. There's actually a controversial video of a full frontal nude girl in the bathtub eating beans and farting that the staff defended as within the boundaries of what is acceptable on Vimeo.

are too rounchy for their clean minds. I mean with thinking like that i can bet those bluehost guys spend half a day thinking about (removed) while the healty part of society does their did and spends the rest of the day productively.

Thanks very much guys. I can't believe lunarpages.com can offer unlimited storage and bandwidth for only $5 per month, but that's what it says. Then again, if 100,000 people hit this video every month I bet they'll rescind that deal.

The problem with hosting it on my own site is the chance a lot of people will see it and bog down the server. Indeed, the whole point of this video is to spread virally, and I HOPE a million people will watch it!

Two years ago I put my Cello Rondo video on my own site, and someone posted a link at Digg. Next thing I knew, 9,000 people tried to watch it at once, and my web host shut down my site for three days because they thought it was a DOS attack! Versus YouTube or Vimeo that can theoretically handle a lot of viewers without getting bogged down.

And to John, thanks - I may take you up on that. :->)

Thanks again guys. If Sony doesn't object, I'll post a link here when the video is done and online. It's very funny! And did I mention there's total female nudity? :->)

Patryk,

Those two videos are pure artistic genius, especially the Polaroid version which I find irresistible.

No doubt these videos got banned because they featured women without burkas, and male upper nudity (front and rear, leaving both shoulder blades and non-functioning chest parts exposed!). A moral outrage!

I got a basic hosting account at LunarPages yesterday. I gave them the "MEKelly" "alias" here at the Sony Vegas Forum, but I don't think you will get credit without a real name.

Thanks for the tip. It is about half the cost of my current hosting provider, whose performance has deteriorated since they virtualized the servers ...

Thanks Chip. My real name is Mike Kelly (in Marietta, GA). If it's not too much trouble do you mind passing on the info to them; every little bit helps!

I think you'll be very happy with them. They have proven very reliable, you get tons and tons of storage and bandwidth, the price is really cheap, and the customer service is awesome.

Thanks again!

Thanks. I took this advice and just signed up with Lunarpages for a dedicated server at $99 per month. I'm sure I won't need that much bandwidth! But after all the effort and expense to produce this video, I'd rather pay $100 for one month to be sure nobody gets a time-out error or slow streaming if the video gets a lot of hits. I'll assess the site traffic during the first month and most likely switch down to a $5 or $10 plan later.

Thanks again guys.

Not related to the post, but...

Thank you for Rondo.

I passed it along to a co-worker whose 9 year old daughter is lugging around a cello, back and forth to school.

She now thinks it's SO much cooler than she did before. :^)

I've been using Lunarpages for several years too, had a good experience with them.

Didn't know so many people here used them too, that's cool.

It's let down by the editing. The natural flow of the dialogue is broken to fit in a shot. No matter how much you love the shot if it doesn't fit, loose it. If what is in the shot is vital to the story then you find a way to get the shot into the dialogue.
Just like music speech has a rythm to it. Listen to the dialogue without watching the images, if the tempo is broken it's very jarring.

Ethan, the more I watched, the more interested I became in the subject!

Maybe this has inspired me to do more instructional videos!
