Setting 'Snapshot' resolution

XOG wrote on 7/17/2003, 5:08 PM
I just learned that the resoltion of the resulting image when taking a Snapshot of the time line is dependent on the size of the preview window.

snapshot resolution is determined by the size of the video preview window. Smaller size preview = smaller size Snapshot - therefore lower resolution (e.g. 163x120, 96dpi).

To get a FULL RESOLUTION SNAPSHOT, you must have video preview size set to FULL (rather than AUTO). Snapshot will then be 654x480, 96dpi res

It doesn't appear to matter what preview QUALITY is set to, though I only tried Best and Good.

Am I the only person in the Vegas world that didn't know this?

Cheers,

XOG

I do not understand why SF made the preview window
control the snapshot size. Makes no sense.
My preview window is always 360x288 and if I want
a snapshot I would very much like it to be the same
size as the video file, 720x576.
SF should change this I think.

xog - good post / point. I learned that too...one thing I didn't have time to figure out - I wanted a large snapshot, but when I resized the preview window (tried different quality settings), I could only get the large size w/ an interlaced preview (I think that's how it was - maybe the other way around?). I wanted the snapshot but didn't need the interlace - do you know offhand how to let Vegas preview at full size but progressive? It may be related to my video card, which is none - the motherboard chipset (p4 2gz, 40meg ram). I am researching some cards but not there yet. Did you encounter the above?

For capturing stills

Right-click on the Video Preview and pick "Display at project size".

Set your project property "Interlace" format to "progressive" and the (advanced property) "Deinterlace method" to "Interpolate" so you won't get any interlace artifacts in your images. Make sure to set the interlace property back before you render your project, you only want progressive for the still capture step.

Use "Save Timeline snapshot to file" because it deals with pixel aspect ratio, while "Copy Snapshot" does not.

Good info!!!
Thanks guys. I ran across this too, but had to resize the screen to full size for snapshot.
Great info

A note on Interpolate vs. Blend: I've found that to get the best frame grab, I'll try each of these deinterlace methods. They produce very subtle changes in the snapshot, depending on motion etc. Sometimes a trade-off between "smooth" and "sharp".

For example, find a frame where a flash bulb goes off. You'll see that moment captured differently.
