setup folder delete

Recently purchased boxed Movie Studio Platinum 8.0a / DVD Architect Studio 4.5a. Following install, updates 8.0c and 4.5c were downloaded. Most surprised to find that the default extraction folder was a new Setup folder created within Program Files! In my experience setup files are almost by definition temporary. Because of the unusual location I queried Sony Tech Support as to whether I could safely delete the Setup folder following the update. I am aware that a similar question has been asked before within these forums and, as expected, the answer was delete if required. However, Sony Tech Support came back with the reply "You do not want to delete the Sony Setup folder because it still contains key data needed to run the software". As the folder appears to consist of no more than updated versions of the installer and cab files that are in the setup folder on the original CD, I find Sony's answer hard to accept. Have requested confirmation but cannot get a response. Thus can anyone confirm, for these two specific applications, that I can safely delete the setup folder created by the extraction of the update versions.

Ok, I'm so far over my head it isn't funny, but here it goes. Why do you want to get rid of it in the first place....... space (mine is 269 MB), principal, or something else? Not sure I would want to go against Sony Tech, but if I were, I would copy the folder to your desktop, and then delete the other one. Replace it with the desktop version if things don't go according to plan. To add an extra level of safety, I would also create a fresh backup/restore point. Let us know how it turns out. Cin

I delete the Sony setup folder every time, after a new install/update. it has never caused me any problems. Afterall, if I need any of it, a quick "install" will reinstate it anyway.

(this applies to:
SF7, SF9, Vegas7, Vegas 8Pro, CDA, DVDA, Acid Music Studio 7, and more. Never had a problem, on any machine)

The original reason i heard for leaving the setup folder was that if you wanted to reinstall you could do so from that folder without having to unpack the original installer file. Well, i've never found a way to do that so i always ended up going back to the original installer file anyway.

Go ahead and delete it. There's no benefit to leaving it there. As far as i can see the single biggest reason for reinstalling is when updating to a new release. In that case, the files in the setup folder are obsolete and useless anyway.
