SFK File Problem

William Osborn wrote on 5/31/2016, 9:25 AM
Hi there,

I've encountered a strange problem while using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.0. Basically I've always had ".sfk" files show up after I've edited videos, and I'm fine with that happening, but one strange thing is that the files are not actually displaying as ".sfk" and are instead displaying as ".mp4", which is confusing, and I'm not sure why it's happening. When I right click on the file and select "properties" it says it's an .sfk, but externally the file says it's an .mp4. Sorry if this sounds confusing, but it's the only way I can explain it. I'll try to post a picture soon if I can.

Thank you to anyone who helps :)

.sfk files are not media files. They are merely the waveform that appears on your audio clips.

I'm not sure why your computer is misidentifying them as Mp4s.

sfk is your waveform file. If it is not there it will be recreated when you open your project.
mp4 is your media (video) file. It is created when you render your movie. The two are independent and unrelated.

Is there any way that I can post a screenshot on here, so that I can show you what I mean? I don't know how to post a screenshot on these forums, I only created my account a couple of days ago.

You have to post a screenshot on a photo sharing site or dropbox and then link it here.

This is what the file looks like on the outside (where it says .mp4):

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cj4DJa2WkAAI6W9.jpg:large

And this is the file with its properties open (where it says .sfk instead)

So if the file is an .mp4, why does it say .sfk in the properties?

Hi William,

It appears the .mp4 file you reference in your screenshot, is in fact the .sfk file. It appears you have the file extension turned off in your folder display. Turn on the ability to view (see) your file extensions in folder view and you will see your files with the full file name....which in this case will be 'Grandad Talks to the Urn - Only Fools and Horses - BBC.mp4.sfk'.

That fixed my problem! Thank you so much George, you're the best! Sorry about the silly mistake I made having that option checked in the folder view.

Just one more question. Is the "Opens With" section in the properties of the file supposed to say "Unknown application"?

Eagle Six wrote on 6/1/2016, 11:57 AM
I'm on a Windows 7 (SP1) box and mine list the 'Open with' as 'Windows Shell Common DLL'.

After you set the folder view to see the file extensions, does it still show 'Unknown application'? I'm not sure, but I don't think it really matters. Other odd support files I have looked at either say the 'Windows Shell Common DLL', or 'Unknown application'. I think it may only be important when you launch the file, and then the file needs the appropriate association to an executable program to recognize and rune the file.

You'll never open the .sfk files directly, so it doesn't matter what association they have. These files are opened automatically by Vegas/SoundForge/DVDA/CDA/ACID, etc when you open up a project that references them.
