'SFMMCX' Problem - No Burn - Solutions Anyone?

All, I am looking for a solution, if anyone has one ...

I see numerous of you have had the "dreaded" 'SFMMCX' problem. Should I expect a fix from Sony, or just give up and buy some other software? It's unfortunate that software this good at authoring, has this sort of problem due to poor programming and/or testing. I own around $10K worth of Sony gear, and I still can't get a fix for the software :-(

My story ...
I have unsuccessfully tried to burn the the demo on the web ... With Sony's downloadable test file, I get an error 'SFMMCX' -(17) 'atapi' -(1) - 'TDK DVDRW0404N 1.0A' (0) and the burn aborts.

There appears to be a (old) forum thread on this subject with no real solution??? Please see ...
http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=159802&Page=6&ms=1 ... It appears the problem is back ...

I continued to try other options with the Sony download sample file ... all with the same result. The burn hangs at 8% complete and then times out at the end of the burn.
1) Checked that I had the latest firmware in the DVD drive ... I also checked that I had the latest IDE drivers
2) I retried the DVD-RW burn - the disk erased but hung at 8% on burn - I aborted the burn
3) I tried a simulation to a DVD-R - the burn hung at 8% and then timed out with the same error.

Additional information ... take 2 ...

I found some similar problems on the web ...

I have a NEC DVD_RW Nd-1300a 1.06 ... when I press "burn dvd" ... 'SFMMCX' -(17) 'atapi' -(1) _NEC DVD_RW Nd-1300a 1.06' -(1)

and ...

Sonic Foundry DVD Architect in an error message wrote"
'SFMMCX' -(17) 'atapi' -(1) PIONEER DVD-RW DVD-104 1.40'-(1)

There were other similar problems ...

No solutions though ...

Additional information ... take 3 ...

I just thought that I would add that ROXIO Easy CD/DVD Creator, Cyberlink PowerProducer 3, ULead DVD Movie Factory and Roxio Instant CD+DVD all write to the DVD drive without a problem.

Is there a patch or something to correct the problem???

Thanks

Damian

I recently started having similar error messages after Windows XP SP2 update. I never got the errors before the update. Now I cannot write from DVD Architect to any DVD-R. I am using a Sony DRU-510A drive. I have applied the latest firmware updates. I can write to it from other apps, but no longer from DVD Architect.
