I have a Sony DRU500AX, and by the moment all is good. It can make DVD+R,+Rw,-R,-RW and CD-R, RW. It's a good drive.

I've had only a little problem with a +R disc, but it was a software problem, not a drive problem, I'd made an incompatible disc. :-(

See you.

I alos have the SONY multi-format DVD burner. I have burned about 130 DVD's so far and not one coaster yet. It has been a great drive so far. I use Verbatim DVD-Rs.

I have Pioneer 105 and Sony (firewire enclosure). Both produce excellent DVD's with excellent compatiblity. While the Sony is more expensive, I don't know if it will be in the long run (yet to be seen). I have been able to competitively shop for price on quality media, (I only use Verbatim and Pioneer media, as I have had zero problems with them), and can purchase the best price du jour.

While on the topic of DVD writers, what do you guys do for labeling short runs? I currently stick on paper labels (white) and it seems to be OK with my DVD players. However, I've read somewhere that this may damage the player and the disk.

I know that there is an Epson printer that will print on DVD's and CD's, but like many, I'm on a budget.

Cheers,

This is a raging topic. Do a search on this board. I personally do labels all the time, no problems. Some people have nothing but trouble--some players hate labels.

It's fair to say that we all will be printing our own CD/DVD white blanks 5 years from now, but I'm not buying the new Epson 900 for a while.

Oh, regarding burners: I use a Cendyne/Pioneer 05 that I found for $150. Ritek G04 blanks burn at 4x (15minutes) and can be bought for $2 each.

bought a Pioneer A03 in June 2000, soon as it was released in the UK paid £650 for it.!!
Back then there was nothing except DVD it, ide never heard of vegas video, started out with Video Factory 2. It was certainly a HUGE learning curve in those days, believe me.

I think im right in saying i was the first person to do a mainstream DVDoio, any collectoers of live bands will be aware of the term Roio or Voio.

Have been using REEL dvd for the last 18 months, aswell as vegas Video and vegas 4.

Now have a pioneer A04 and an A05, you cant go wrong buying any of those 2

I have the Sony DRU-500A. Solid as a rock. At this stage of the game, support for all formats is a great hedge against whatever happens in the future.

On another front, has anyone developed a sense of which media is best? Maxell? Memorex? Verbatim? Is there any difference at all beyond price?

I bought a batch of no name brand DVD-r 's for $2 Canadian a piece and they seem to work fine with my Sony DRU-500AX
way2slo wrote on 5/16/2003, 4:49 PM
also take a look at the TDK brand, i bought 4 pieces 2x dvdr from costco $12.99 cdn plus tax.
i had 8 dvd burned, non of them failed.
they do have + and - dvdr.
the good thing is, i have a friend screwed up one(his kid turn off the pc while burning LOL), he just take it back to costco and get a refund.

Sony DRU500AX here. Multiformat is the wave of the present.

Also, I hear there's some kind of connection between Sony now and Sonic Foundry............................................................

Check out the message I just left on the DVD Architect Forum. There is a brand new Sony DRU-510A. It looks like the 500AX is being replaced with this new drive.

Sonic Foundry - Have you tested this new Sony drive with V4 and DVD Architect and will you support it?

Has anyone tried this new drive yet?

Using the Sony DRU-500a, firmware rev e. No coasters and good compatibility with a variety of media, both +R and -R, with a variety of set-top players and DVD-ROM drives.

The one issue I have had: I get no difference in time buring 2x or 4x. Either takes about 30 minutes for a full disc. Have tried 5 different brands of media from cheap spindle media to "brand name", both + and -, but no difference in burn speeds. Anyone have any suggestions?

Where's the link to rev G? Sony's site still lists rev f as the latest.
