Sharpen Settings

Is it just me, or are there really only 3 sharpen settings? Light, Medium and High? Even though there is a slider for amounts between these settings, it doesn't work. Sometimes I need half the sharpness of the light setting, but it doesn't allow me to do it.

I'm using V5. Does V6 allow such increment settings beyond just 3?

I just fired up V5. Er .. tell me, can you actually see a slider? This gives increments down to 1000% of the WHOLE value? Can you see it?

Click on the Slider Button and if you have/use a mouse wheel and hold down the Ctrl button you get increments of 1/1000. OR you can use the UP and DOWN arrows for the same incremental changes.

Grazie, that holding-down-the-CRTL-button to get smaller increments is a very useful tip. For me, it lets me adjust the offset slider in the color corrector without huge steppy increments. Thanks!

IMHO, best answer is never to use the sharpen filter at all. Use the convolution filter instead, as it gives you far more control. A number of posts here in the past. Search on RichMacDonald/unsharp mask/convolution filter. Basically, insert a convolution kernel filter and select "sharpen" from the drop down. Then alter the middle value to taste: Lower is more extreme and higher is less, although certain low values will turn it haywire. For even more control, duplicate the normal clip on a lower track and vary the opacity of the filtered clip.

I have much to learn...
What is Sharpen (or the convolution kernel) used primarily for?

Thanks folks. Good tips.

I use sharpen just to tweak footage that might be a tad blurry.
