Sharpening Always on at 000?

RalphM wrote on 11/10/2004, 9:37 AM
I've been working some 60 year old B&W negatives into a slide show using Vegas 4.
Being able to adjust the images while previewing on an external monitor is great! One problem I have is that if I select the sharpening fx, there is always sharpening applied even when the amount desired is set to 000. In some cases, that's too much.

Is there a way to zero the amount in a manner that allows less sharpening then the 000 setting?
Thanks

You'll have to actually remove the effect from those sections. Just split the video around those sections and totally remove the effect (or, at least, uncheck it).

Thanks,
I'm still in the project stage, so removing the sharpening is no problem. What I was wondering is if there is a way to lessen the amount.

If I look at the presents available and choose "Light", the sharpening amount changes to 0.250... If I choose 000, the effect on the image is the same as choosing "Light". In other words, there is no setting between true 000 and 0.250?

I checked Vegas 5 to see how it handled sharpening. It works correctly, allowing subtle levels of sharpening to be used when needed. Guess it's a glitch in V4.

Had been using V4 because I have not yet sprung for the upgrade on Excaliber which is very useful in slide show editing.

Same here in V5... sharpening @ 0 is still sharpening.

Must be pretty subtle in V5 - of course I do own a pair of old eyes (and they were never very good - even as young eyes).

Not an elegant solution but… if you want less than 0.000 sharpening in Vegas you can duplicate the event on a track directly above, add the fx to the event on top and pull down the opacity until you get just the right amount of sharpening you want. And I agree that 0 should be 0, i.e., none.

Add Sharpening Filter, and also Quick Blue Filter after... experiment.

Good Luck

If you do slideShow editing, Take a look at Utimate S, Photo Montage. You will like it. Info available at www.vasst.com

Don't use the sharpen filter. For better results and better control, use the convolution filter.

Select the convolution filter, select the sharpen setting (vegas not handy, so ymmv :-), then adjust the number in the center of the 3x3 dialog. For greater control, duplicate the track, apply the filter to the lower track, then blend the two.

sharpen filter even at 0 will also change your levels , watch the scope as you apply it ..
