Sharpening filters

Several of the videos that I have made in the past especially the older ones what came from a VHS source don't look nearly as sharp as I would like them. I have seen what the sharpen & unsharpen filters can do in the preview window. Can these filters really give improved appearance without introducing other undesirable side effects? Am I correct in assuming that if I were to apply these filters to most or all of a project that I will be increasing the rendering time by a considerable factor?

Sharpen filter will render in "normal" time, like most of the filters.
If you ever use the "Median" filter, though, THEN you will get a looooooooooong render time...

Take a look at http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=139087. This approach gives you more control than the sharpen/unsharpen. You'll have to adjust brightness and contrast afterwards, though.
