Shooting 16:9

Movick wrote on 6/24/2007, 9:05 PM
Hello all,

Just picked up an XL2 which as most of ypu know is really designed to shoot in 16:9. I've been to date shooting with a PD-150 in 4:3 and I'm not sure which project setting (aspect) to use for 16:9 for the XL2. When I use NTSC DV, I get letterboxing. When I use 720X480 widescreen I get truncation.

Can someone please help.

Thanks!

NTSC (728x480) Widescreen.

Note that sometimes the 16:9 flag seems to get lost, R Click the clips in the media pool and correct the aspect ratio and you're good to go.

Sorry Farss - didn't see the top part of your response. Am I to understand that the project settings should be set to 720X480 wide, and each clip as well? I r.clicked the clips in the pool and they seem to denote the widescreen setting; however the image appears squashed widthwise. I don't know why this is.

Also, what is the proper pixel size for stills used in 720X480 wide created in Photoshop and such? I create a lot of mates and overlays and they never fit when I go to 720X480 wide.

Thanks

Have you turned on Simulate Device Aspect in your Preview Monitor?

For PS use 873x480 for 16:9 wide.

Here's a tip, when working in PS or other graphics things take a sample from the Preview window with Simulate Device Aspect ON at Best / Full. Open that jpg or png with PS and you're certain the PS project is the right size.
