Should I upgrade to 4.0?

I'm a registered and (so far) satisfied user of VV 3.0. I'm thinking of upgrading to 4.0 and DVD Architect but my chief worries are 1) the financial stability of the company and the possibility that VV might go poof 2) the technical stability of VV 4.0 and my experience with upgrades: they tend to be buggier and more bloated than the glorious version I fell for in the first place.

All advice appreciated.

I say go for it now for several reasons:

1) The cost is MUCH lower between now and March 15th than they will be later
2) There are MANY improvements over Vegas 3
3) They can BOTH be installed so you don't lose Vegas 3 to also have Vegas 4
4) Once registered, it will continue to run

Tanjy,

I agree with JetDV. You save $100 by doing the combined upgrade before March 15. You can keep your Vegas 3 as a known quantity and Vegas 4 is enough of a known quantity to be well worth the cost of the upgrade, even if something did derail its continued development. DVD Architect is less mature, but I think it is worth the risk. I plan to go for the combined Vegas+DVD upgrade myself. Back up your software on CD-Rs and you have a relatively safe investment. I am hoping for a bright future for Vegas, ACID, Sound Forge, et al, and the whole programming team of good, capable people behind those products, even if there should be a change in ownership of the products.

On a related note, I am still happily using Adobe Photoshop 5.0.2 even though Photoshop 7 is the current version. Software doesn't "wear out." Although there have been a few recent plug-ins that require a later version of Photoshop than I have, and the current version of Photoshop does have some new features that I could use, so I do have some motivation to upgrade. My point is that Vegas 4 should continue to be useful to you long into the future even if for some reason its development to Vegas 5 and beyond didn't happen. I will probably upgrade to Photoshop 8 later this year. And to Vegas 5 next year. Sonic Foundry really "has my number" on these upgrades -- they are always making me an offer that I can't refuse. But I'm not complaining.

Hi Tanjy,

V4 is an NLE you can *love*. That may sound stupid, but it is so good and such a value.

As mentioned, you will still have 3.0...

I don't fear for the future of Vegas, its trajectory is heading *up*. But if the worst happens, at least I have V4 in my hands; which is almost everything I could want in an NLE.

To add to what martyh just said: the problem is that people don't seem to KNOW about Vegas. They all plunged in Premiere a few years ago and never tried anything else after. So, personnally, I'm spreading the word on any forum I can so we can all have, someday, a Vegas 5, and 6, and 7... just can't imagine what they're gonna do to make it more than what it is right now!
