Show 3rd Party CODECS?

Grazie wrote on 10/10/2007, 1:54 AM
OK - I've been on a kinda long haul with this DivX Encoder business.

I have installed the newest DivX CODEC, 6.7. But I also have, in the Preference list, "Ignore 3rd Party Codecs" enabled. Meaning, Vegas is to ignore 3rd party CODECS - yes?

Well, the DivX CODEC appears as an options for rendering the VIDEO and I've gone ahead and done it.

Q1: Should this CODEC appear if I have "Ignore 3rd Party Codecs" enabled in Prefs?

Q2: As I have this "Ignore 3rd Party Codecs" enabled why is it showing up as an option?

Q3: Is DivX a 3rd party codec?

Q4: How do I know IF the CODEC is now properly doing its thing, if I have "Ignore 3rd Party Codecs" enabled?

Q5: Is Vegas "ignoring" another type of CODEC?

TIA

Grazie

I *think* the 3rd party codec thing only refers to codecs that Vegas itself has e.g. the DV codec.

If that's the case then:

A1: Yes
A2: See above
A3: No, as Vegas doesn't have a DivX codec of its own
A4: It'll be available as an option or not, no half measures
A5: Yes the MS DV codec, other mpeg-1/2 codecs as well I think

Ignore 3rd party codecs applies to those types that come natively installed in Vegas, such as DV and MPEG. It doesn't apply to others. Well, kinda obviously so since you see the DivX codec there, right?

I'm really confused now. Nothing new there.

So, if Vegas is gonna ignore that which it brings - eh? - just what IS a 3rd Party CODEC? And as for "No, as Vegas doesn't have a DivX codec of its own" - doesn't it then mean that DivX IS a 3rd Party CODEC? Seesh!

And Kelly, "Well, kinda obviously so since you see the DivX codec there, right? " Nope, not to me! Just because I can see might mean it is a bug or it broken . . or any number of things? Yes???

I still want to know "what" and "why" makes a CODEC a "3rd Party"? To me a "3rd Party", anything, implies an outsider or stranger. And AS DivX ISN'T one of the Vegas native CODECS - surely this too IS a 3rd Party?

Is the MAIN Concept Encoder CODECS (these have CODECS?) 3rd Party? Is so are they being ignored too?

TIA . .

. . I'm now going to empty the dishwasher . . I can understand how to do that . .

Grazie,

Unfortunately I have nothing more to add than confusion. I have Divx Pro installed and I do not see any render options to use Divx. I would love the ability to go straight from my DV source to Divx (after a little editing of course), so my question is why can you go directly from Vegas to Divx and I can not?

>I have Divx Pro installed and I do not see any render options to use Divx.<

You need to "Render As..." then chose the AVI option, go into the "Custom" menu and select the DivX CODEC there. You can save the parameters you set up as a custom profile for future use.

One thing I'd like to do is be able to specifically select a CODEC for use with a particular file. Not sure how to do that...

I really need to stop replying to my own posts, but I found it under the "video" settings, just like you posted. Sometimes it really helps to read.

I think that 3rd party codec only refer to input files, you can render out to any codec you choose.
It only apply to files that can be read using sony and non-sony decoders - for example mpeg files or dv-avi) . Ignore 3rd party - will use the sony decoder, don't ignore - use the codec that was used for the encoding.

Nuance. Everything is nuance.

I don't know the answers, but I would like to say that I appreciate your questions.

There is an ambiguity in all language, and when you are struggling to articulate it in a certain instance, it can feel pretty lonely.

What shape is your answer taking? Or--What better questions are you now asking?
