"Show Me How" missing

Kalvos wrote on 8/18/2007, 6:42 PM
Hi all,

VMS 6.0b, WinXP.

I accidentally launched the video capture twice, which tends to crash WinXP back to a black screen. I've learned not to do that, but forgot. :(

This time, though, it took out the Show Me system -- which I don't need, but it throws an error every time I run the program. I ran the repair installation, but no luck. The error persists (yes, the program works fine).

Where are the Show Me files and how do I fix this short of a full uninstall/reinstall?

Thanks,
Dennis

I remember the samed happened with me when I upgraded from 6 to 6b. But restarting VMS, or was it restarting XP, brought back the 'show me how'.

Nothing that simple -- wish it were. I can't find anything in the knowledge base. The error reads:

"Warning: An error occurred while initializing the Show Me component.
All Show Me functionality will be disabled.
An error occurred while writing the file. Make sure you have write access to the file/folder and that there is enough free space."

But there's not enough info for what files or folders.

Some Registry checkers and cleaners tend to remove more entries as they should. So my Vegas media manager just got shot down.

This was caused by VMS crashing (see first post). Perhaps it corrupted the registry entries rather than VMS files.

I'm happy to delete the VMS registry entries and have the repair function rebuild them. Do you know which refer to the "Show Me How" subsystem?

Thanks,
Dennis

Bump up.

I've ordered the VMS 8 upgrade, but still want to fix this VMS 6 problem first in case it affects all versions of that subsystem.

Thanks,
Dennis
