Side-to-side scrolling text

Hope I can explain what I'm trying to do. Here goes.

I want to have a sentence such as, "Don't worry Mom, the natives here are not nearly as aggressive as reported." scroll across the screen smoothly.

I know how to insert text media, use pan/scroll (Ken Burn's effect) to get the text to scroll and I know how to place the text in the correct portion of the screen. What I don't know is how to get it to do this with a long line of text such as above.

If I type in the sentence, usually on the last part is what is actually scrolled/displayed. The rest of it is chopped off before it is even displayed. If that makes sense.

Is it possible to do this in VMS 11?

Have you tried just creating the title as a still title and then applying Pan/Crop animation to this this title clip to create the motion across the screen.

If the title workspace won't let you create a title that wide, you can create the text in a program like Photoshop/Photoshop Elements and save it as a transparent GIF. You can then overlay it on your video and use Pan/Crop to animate its crawl across your screen.

That's the problem, the title-workspace will not let me display the whole line of text that wide. It let's me create it just fine.

Hmmmm. Transparent gif. That's an idea. I'll have to get a copy of Photoshop Elements and see if that will do what I'm looking for.

I guess the best way to describe this is I want to be able to have text crawl across the screen like they have on some news programs. That's what I'm trying to emulate.

You can do this is the ProTitler in Vegas Pro 10. Isn't a variant of ProTitler in VMS10 or 11? What version are you using? You can download a trial of VMS 10 or 11 and see if this does the tick for you.

If you are on VMS 9 or earlier, you can install the trial 10 or 11 side by side. If you decide you don't want the trial, you can uninstall it without harming your other software.

If I understand correctly, all you need to do is add spaces to the end of your sentence using the text titler. VMS will then scroll through all the empty space at the end....

Dead-simplest, easiest, fastest, cheapest, and guaranteed to not rot your gut method:

Create a plain simple one-line text event, all the text in one long line. Use the Placement tab and create a keyframe at the beginning of the event with the text placed out of the frame to the right. Add another keyframe at the end with the text placed out of the frame to the left. Done.

Well, you would think so. BUT if I type:
"Well mom, the natives are not nearly so aggressive as was first reported."
or something long like this, then what happens is that the "Well mom," and the "was first reported" get cut off in the text window.

Wish there was a way to post a small video so I could show ya'll rather than try to describe it.

It works as Chienworks says.

1) Add Default Text to the timeline.
2) Paste your "Well mom... " text into the text box, size/format as necessary.
3) Click on Placement tab and drag leading edge of the text off the right edge.
4) Click Animate
5) Move scrubber to trailing edge of timeline
6) Drag text so the trailing edge is off the left edge (keyframe automatically set)
7) Close Media Generator window
8) Watch text scroll as you play the video on the timeline
9) Smiles

Added: Grazie, I think items 3 and 6 are what you're getting at.

I have VMS Plat 11. There is no placement tab but there is a location section.

Maybe that is the underlying issue. I'll try again this afternoon after work.

Just so we're on the same page, in the Media Generators tab, locate (Legacy) Text and drag the Default Text preset to the timeline, when you release it on the timeline the Video Media Generators properties window should open. The Edit tab is where you place the text, the Placement tab is for location.

Where do you see the Location section?
