Simple Edit question from newbie

I see at least two ways to edit. 1) on the timeline. 2) in the trimmer window. Which is more often used? I like the trimmer window approach, but I don't know how to move video from there to the track. I tried the little A, but it didn't seem to insert. Is there a tutorial somewhere I am missing, or a section of the manual I've overlooked? Thanks!

I suspect technique preferences are different for each user, but for me I find I do 90% of my editing in the timeline. The Trimmer comes in handy for fine-editing of I/O points, especially when I don't want to spend the time zooming back and forth in the timeline to get the resolution I require.

I've found it's easier to edit larger clips in the timeline, and smaller ones in the trimmer (maybe 30 seconds ones). With the larger clips it's easier just to slice the parts of the clip i want.

Oh, to move from the trimmer to the timeline, you need to highlight the part you want to move in blue, then drop/drag to the timeline.

OK, I've been able to select (I think) a portion of the video using in and out keys (I and O) I now want to cut everything but this. I see that I can use the trim function if the selection is blue. But, I don't know how to get the selection to turn blue, if I used the in and out keys???

Ctrl+Arrow will get you to one marker. Ctrl Shift+arrow will select (mark) the area up to the next marker (and the next again if you repeat it).
If you right-click the area you can choose select vido only, audio only or both. Then you click-drag your selection to the timeline and drop it where it should go. If there isn't a track there, one will be created - or two, as the case may be.
You don't edit in the trimmer, just mark and select. You may also choose to save your markers. Then you'll see them again next time you open your project, otherwise they'll be gone.

Still not quite there. Here's what I'm doing (all in the trimmer) I press play, and the I and O keys to begin. A "Loop Region" then appears above the timeline. This is a shaded bar with yellow triangles on either end. This is what I would now like to select, and move to the timeline, or return to the timeline. When I press Ctrl+arrow, it moves to the beginning of the clip, or the end (left or right) I cannot figure out how to select (turn blue) this region? Thanks for your patience!

Just double-click in the shaded gray area between the two yellow triangles that are your in and out points. You'll know if the cursor is in the right place because you'll see tooltip text reporting the loop region limits.

You can also hit "R" to create a region with its limits set to the in and out points. Then the locations of the in and out points will be remembered, and you can adjust them by grabbing them and dragging them with the mouse.
