Simple, frustrating question from new Vegas user

OK, trying to learn Vegas - I've used products from Pinnacle, Ulead, Magix, etc. so not a novice, but a novice to Vegas.

I want to do something very simple in most programs. I need to import a small rectangular graphic - something like a blue rectangle with Joe's Training Videos Inc on it in white text - and place it precisely in the video in the location in the frame where I want it. I also want to size it.

In most programs, such as Pinnacle's products or the Magix products, I'd simply drag the joes.bmp onto a timeline below the video timeline, stretch it to the length of the video, then enter a form of Edit Object which will let me size the rectangle then simply drag it to where I want it to be in the frame.

In Vegas, all I can find is an option in which the rectangle is shown on a form of outline of a frame, then it looks like I have to try to resize the frame and move the frame to get the object to the size and placement I need, rather than directly act on the object. It is clumsy, and it behaves oddly in terms of not doing what I would expect it to do.

Is there another, simpler way to place an overlay graphic object on the frame and size it and place it?

Thanks

Vegas does not emulate the actions of the editors you named. That means there is a new learning curve, but it will be no more awkward than the methods you are used to once you have a little practice.

You would drag your still onto the timeline, and precisely position and size it using Event Pan/Crop or Track Motion, depending on whether you want to manipulate it at the event or track level. Your results are updated in real time in the preview window. The controls and settings available to you are what give you pixel-accurate precision in Vegas. They are explained in detail in the Help section of Vegas.

I will keep working at it then. It is more awkward than simply displaying the object on the frame in the preview window and moving the object and resizing it, as it is done in other programs. I've read through the help file already, and worked with it several times, but it is very tricky indirectly moving and sizing it. I could use a tutorial with tips and tricks on using that function.

First of all, put the image on a track ABOVE the the other track.

Use Pan/Crop if you wish to zoom into or crop the image in any way.

Use Track Motion to resize smaller and then position the image.

I think you'll find it works the way you want that way.

Hmm - I'll try that thanks!

If so you need to zap some Vegas DLL files so they can run in 64-bit mode. See this message for details:
