Simple task, "I thought"

kgresko wrote on 1/21/2004, 2:56 PM
Here is what I am trying to do:

I have about 45 min of captured video that I want to just copy, unedited, to a Mini DV tape for archiving. I clicked on "Make Movie" and it renders it as an .avi file. Then when it finishes rendering, and I have my DV Camcorder plugged into the firewire port on the PC, I then get the window which says Scrrenblast Video Capture, I select the tab which says to print to tape , with the file name indicated, I then click on Record to device and I get a full screen image of my rendered video and nothing is happening on my DV Camcorder. Is the DV Camcorder supposed to be in record or play?

I am sure I am doing something real dumb, but I am at a dead end. I am trying to conserve HD space and I figured this would be the cheapest way to archive captured video.

Make sure in Options / Preferences you have Enable DV device control checked. Then turn your camera on to the playback mode. (i.e., my Panasonic PV-601 has a three position switch for camera/off/playback). Then just use Print to tape and it should place your camera in record mode automatically.

Thanks JR. Still no luck. The settings you mentioned were correct. When I click on Copy to Tape, the Camcorder just sits there and doesn't go into record. I did this a week ago or so and was able to do it. Are there any special settings that I have to make in my Camcorder. I have a Sony DCR-TRV18. I know it is possible. I for the life of me cannot remember how I did it before. As I recall, a little red dot appeared on my Camcorder LCD which meant that it was recording.

Does anyone have any other ideas??

It sounds like you are doing everything correctly.

Do any of the camcorder controls work from Screenblast? I.e. before pressing record, if you press fast forward/rewind is it controling the tape?

I have a Sony PC9, and yes the red dot comes on when recording... the camcorder also says "DV IN" when connected to the firewire.

Some long shot ideas:

- Have you used the camcorder for analog pass-thru lately? If you have the option set for that I don't think the normal DV control will work.

- Really dumb one, is the write protect tab set on the tape?

Yea, sounds like you’re dong everything right. As mbryant suggested, I would check to see if you can control the camera from Screenblast by pressing play or fastforward in the capture program and see if the camera responds. If this doesn’t work then you have to figure out why the camera can’t be controlled via firewire. If it does work, then try pressing the record button manually and see if it records anything. Could it be that the record is set to record from your video inputs instead of firewire? Very strange.

JR and mbryant thanks for your suggestions. I just spent 2 hours on the phone with Sony support for my DCR-TRV18, reset it to the defaults, played with the settings in the menu. Screenblast is recognizing my DV camcorder, it is just not going into record when I click on the button in Screenblast to record to tape. I even did a fresh rerender of the avi file and still nothing.

I am going to call Screenblast support. The Sony tech for the camcorder felt that it was a problem in the settings in Screenblast.

If anyone has any other ideas I am willing and desperate to try anything at this point.

Is it possible that you tape you are trying to record to has been locked so it cannot be erased? (you know, the little READ/WRITE tab)

Nope Dave, checked that first.

I don't know if the demo version allows PTT, but you could try Scenalyzer and see if that gives different results.

One other thing to try. Can you get a different Firewire Cable and test. I remember a while back that someone could capture but couldn't output (I don't remember if it was a machine control problem or just a playback problem) until they got a new cable.

I just got off the phone with Screenblast tech support and they told me since I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition that Screenblast is not supported for that version of Windows. HMMMMMMMMM

Has anyone else had this experience with Media Center Edition.

I am very interested to see how this problem is going to be solved, because I am in the same situation... very frustating... I am using the Dazzle black box with no problem to capture, but now in complete stand still to print to tape using Movie Studio capture out.... It was not always perfect with Videofactory, but totally impossible with the upgrade ....
I can see and hear my rendered movie on the little preview screen when I press play, in the Screenblast video capture-Default ,but nothing happens to the VCR. No device detected.... (yet it is in the device manager....Imaging devices AVC compliant DV Tape recorder/player) it appears on the system tray and disappears ....
Can I uninstall and reinstall? or I read I can have "a repair" when I reinstall the program. I am afraid to lose my rendered project....
Thanks for any constructive help...

kgresko wrote on 1/22/2004, 11:30 AM
As long as you remember where you saved your rendered project, like on a "video drive" then you should not lose it when you reinstall/repair. I did find that I can save my project to tape in Scenalyzer Live, which I have been using for over a year for capturing. I can't remember how much it was, but I don't think more than $25.

I am now able to save my avi files to DV tape for archiving, just not with program that I capture and edit with. I think Sony needs to look at this. When I spoke with the tech support guy he told me that I was the fourth person to call with this "output to tape" problem.

I use windows XP media edition with sony vaio pc- rz46g no problems here

sarasdad: Are you telling me that you are able to output a rendered, unedited avi file to DV Tape?

IT worked for me a couple of weeks ago, but now it does not. Screenblast support told me that this is possible that it might work intermittently.

To Kgresko,
I try to reintsall/repair to no avail...
I notice that on the Screenblast Video capture-default page, the video tab has: Microsoft DV camera and VCR no black dot in front? Is it because no Device detected?
I tried successfully 2 hours ago as a test, to capture, render just to be sure that my Dazzle Hollywood DV_Bridge is working.... I capture with this system, as always, and capture out using (Videofactory before )now MovieStudio.
The print to tape doesn't work any better....
Would Scenalyser work with my Dazzle concept?

How do I get out of this problem... I need this project for the end of the week...
kgresko wrote on 1/22/2004, 3:40 PM
NelMichel: I am not at all familiar with the Dazzle device. I am just using the firewire port on my PC to connect my DV Camcorder. I then just play the captured avi file in Scenalyzer and it records directly into my Camcorder.

I think you can get a trial of Scenalyzer. Not sure if the trial will let you output to tape. I do know that when I had the trial the Scenalyzer logo appeared on my captures until you register the program.

Thanks kgresko.
I temporarily solved my problem, by succesfully capturing out with DVout of Dazzle....I wish I could go all the way with Movie Studio....though,. I love this editing program. but boy, they don't make it easy on the capture side....
I don't know when this will be fixed... but my skin is saved for this week-end...

I think I found the solution to my problems. Here Sony, is a product that does what I want it to and it works with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center edition.
