Simple VO -

I want to do simple voice over video.

Regarding the sound, I have an Audigy Live sound card (I know! But it's what I got!), and both a ECM 44B microphone (which I can't seem to get a high enough signal from. Why?) and a ECM DS70P Stereo mike (which works as to level, but is very omnidirectional and picks up too much ambient sound).

I'm a real newbie, bear with me please. Can you walk me through the steps, in broad strokes, that I need to do to record this VO and then to mix the two audio tracks.

Thanks. Bobb

1. Copy and Paste the above link into your browser window.
2. Download
3. Start reading Basic Recording section.
4. Have a nice day

I'll bear with you.
(...allthough this is ofcourse more hardware related than Vegas-related..)

The "why"in your question seems pretty obvious,as you has hinted yourself...did you plug in the mic in the mic input of the Audigy ? Bad idea. If so, a (cheap)( mini) pre amp or mixing board connected to the line in will get you better results

Uhh.. why is it that my whole body shiver and shake if people mention "soundblaster" "sb live"or "Audigy" ?

Anyway.Hope this helps

Gerard.

Yes I did, plugged it right into the mike input.

Have you any suggestions re "a (cheap)( mini) pre amp or mixing board". What? How much?

Thanks.

Thanks for the link.

I don't mind doing the reading, it's knowing where to look.

The link, by the way, just gets me into a loop between the download page and "tell us who you are" i.e I can't get the document you are suggesting.

If you tell me what which download it is, I'll just download the whole thing and then look for your referrenced pages.

Thanks.

Behringer has some real cheap mixing boards...not top notch, but adequate. If you want a (reasonable cheap) all-in-one solution, there are a couple of brands (of computer audio manufacturers)(Tascam,M-Audio too I believe)that sell usb audio interfaces with a build in mic pre amp.

There is a ton of them, art, berringer etc.
I looked up you other mic, it seems to be a lavalier and omni. This is not a good mic choice for voice over. If you've got a bunch of vo work to do consider upgrading your mic. You could also try renting a different mic or two before purchase to find the best combination of price and performance for your needs.

I was posting a direct link to the Vegas 4 manual. Try this one: http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step2.asp?DID=441

Reading this should get you off and running. The basic recording, mixing and advanced editing sections are very informative for a newbie.

I use a Mackie 1202-VLZPro, with an Audio Technica AT4033 mic. Depending on what the client wants, I've switched the mic over to a Shure 55, EV RE20, or some custom mics I've put together with elements from SM58s.

Normally in V.O. work you can bypass the board, and just use a mic preamp and just go into something like a Digital Audio Labs CardD+(Deluxe). I like having the Mackie 1202 in the loop just to have a "handle" on what I'm doing.

I also use the 1202 so I can get a quick input into the editor from CD, cassette, turntable, patchbays, or the Telos.
