Try using media generator - Text (you can choose different styles including transparent background)
Set a keyframe type a letter in the font you like (like courier),
set another keyframe type the next letter, so on and so on.

You may want to turn off kerning as the letters will shift to fill
the line.

EDIT: (Legacy Plug-In) Video Factory Text
was the one I used awhile back and did not move horizontally . Use alignment: LEFT
(upper drop box)

If you need kerning, you can use a moving mask that reveals one letter at a time.

With a "typing sound" this can also be very convincing.

here's a good tutorial on how to simulate a typewriter w Vegas from Marty Helder

http://www.martyhedler.com/homepage/Vegas_Tutorials.html

the key is to right-click on your keyframes and set them to "Hold"

It works!

There is a tutorial on the vasst site that shows you exactly how to do this and it takes less than 5 minutes to do as it is a preset in swishmax (free trial download). Do a search for it on Vasst.

Funny, this used to be one of the most frequently askd questions on this forum, but now it has been a while since I saw it. Nostalgic, almost.

Yea that’s one of the reasons I wrote the tutorial in the first place. Someone always asks about this from time-to-time. Most of my Vegas tips page is directly from posts I’ve answer here in the forums.

I've used CamStudio to great efFect. Takes about as long as it takes to type it. I used WORD.

Grazie,

CamStudio.
How does it stack up against Camtasia?
I see it's free!

Never mind.
Camtasia is much more sophisticated.
Cost is justified.

Camtasia is a complete editing suite like Vegas. It not only captures but also has a video editor which allows you to cut out the bad parts, add music, voiceovers, overlays, etc. and then has several codecs for encoding to a number of formats. It also comes with the TechSmith codec for capture which is the best capture codec I’ve come across. The images are outstanding. So Camtasia is a complete solution from capture to delivery.

CamStudio is just a capture program. You use one of the codecs already on your PC to capture. When you’re done, you have raw footage. You then need and editor like Vegas to make that into something watch. If you already have Vegas, you really don’t need Camtasia for editing, but you can’t beat their codec for clear captures.

If you are delivering for the web, another great free utility is Microsoft’s Windows Media Encoder. It will do screen recording directly to WMV files with surprising quality. Search for it on the Microsoft site.

Then there's always the Star Wars opening text effect...
