Singing the Sony monitor blues!

I have a 3-year old 13-inch Sony studio monitor (PVM-14N6U ) that's already pooped out on me (it started in October of last year)! There are not words to describe how frustrated, angry and disappointed I am, but I won't bore you with that.

It's new, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the JVC TM-H150CGU studio monitor?

Thanks!

"...but I won't bore you with that."

On the contrary. I think you've shown me that maybe there are other places to put my limited funds into, if even expensive monitors can give out prematurely.
I guess a 13" TV will suffice as an external monitor for now.

Hope you have better luck with your next purchase.

Mario, please, don't misunderstand me. Depending on what you're producing videos for, a quality external NTSC/PAL monitor is very important! If it's just a hobby, then yes, I'd agree that the money could be better spent else where.

Too, you have to understand how my luck runs. If there were a 1 in 2 chance that I could win ten million dollars, I'd lose. If there were 1 in 100 million chance that I could get a bad (lemon) monitor, then I'll win... every time!

I understand you. Yes, I'm a hobbyist, so I'll go the TV route.

PS: If there was a 1:1 of me winning the $10 million...I'd win, but I'd have lost the ticket! ;-)

Check this thread for the controversy in depth over monitor vs TV.
I would recommend the TV for the reasons I outlined in my posts in that thread.
Secondly, if you are disapponted in the longevity of a Sony monitor, you will be doubly disappointed in the short life of most JVC products.

John, if you're referring to the post where you suggested a NTSC monitor isn't necessary and that a t.v. is sufficient, I can't agree with you. Our output is only going to be as good as the monitor it's edited on. For me, "good enough" isn't good enough. I want to be assured that I'm getting the best of everything out of my videos--so do my clients!

I presume you've have bad experience with JVC monitors?

I have several Sony PVM professional monitors. Last year I did start having trouble with one of them...after using it for 12 years.

Ten years is my limit. Then time for renewel. In the computer industry
that means you are about 30 years behind.

After 30 years experience with color monitors one thing we'd noticed, the higher the res the shorter the tube life. On one contract we supplied 30 19" monitors, in the 15 months or so from the time we staged the system till we delivered it all the monitors were below spec on emission and at around $1,500 to retube them that was rather expensive.
I'm hoping LCD monitors give better mileage, at least they'll mean less space and less heat.
