Size of AVI Clips

Ok, so now I have my DVD imported into Studio in MPEG-2 format, and I want to edit. I see now what Chienworks meant when he said that Studio works extra hard when editing MPEG, so I'm thinking I'd like to render the movie to something more manageable in Studio, like AVI. But when I try to do this, the resulting AVI starts eating up all available disk space (the video is 1 hr long). It's funny, but it seems to me that when I capture an hour of video from my DV camcorder into AVI format, it doesn't take up all that much space. What am I missing here? Is it just a different codec being used when capturing from DV than when rendering from Studio? Is it possible to get Studio to render to smaller AVI files, or to use the DV codec when rendering?

You'll probably want to use the DV codec as this will only require about 13GB/hour. What you probably did was render uncompressed, which, depending on various settings, can easily eat up over 107GB/hour.

I'm not sitting in front of Studio right now, but how do I select the codec? Do I need to select a specific type of output when I'm rendering, or is there some other way?

Choose Video for Windows (AVI) as the file type, then under Template choose DV NTSC or DV PAL, whichever is appropriate in your neck of the world.

Thanks again! I'll try it this weekend.
