Skipping an upgrade: any penalties?

DSR wrote on 9/11/2007, 2:15 AM
If I understand correctly, anyone with any version of real Vegas (e.g. VV4?) can upgrade to V8 for the same price. Has this always been like this? I am thinking of skipping the current upgrade but worried that the subsequent upgrades from earlier versions (e.g. V7 to V9 vs. V8 to V9) might be priced higher.

I do realize we are projecting the future here, but your past experience should give me some peace of mind.

Many thanks,

Dmitri

Previously you have had the possibility to skip as many upgrades as you've wished. I skipped v6 w/o "penalty".

No-one can say what will be the licensing model with VP9 (if such will be released in the future). On the other hand with mere $139 you can buy "upgrade protection" by staying current all the time.

Your call.

I feel your pain DSR, I "want" to upgrade, but at this point I don't really have a good excuse. I'm not a professional and only use Vegas for mostly family videos. I would certainly like to upgrade, but can't really justify it, even though it's "only" $135...

But I could justify $135 or so next year to jump to VP9.

Decisions decisions....

Well ... let's say there is a penalty. And just for a hypthetical argument lets say that next year VP8 to VP9 upgraders are offered a $135 upgrade but those from previous versions are charged $250. (I'm just making these numbers up off the top of my head; i have NO information to base these on*.) If you upgrade now and again next year you'd spend $270. If you wait to upgrade next year you'd spend $250. So, in this hypothetical case you're still saving $20 by skipping an upgrade. On the other hand, during that second year you lost out on all the new features available in version 8.

And of course, this assumes a penalty. So far SONY has never done this and has always offered the same upgrade deal no matter what version you're coming from.

*Actually, those prices are the earlybird upgrade price and the regular upgrade prices. My guess is that if SONY were to penalize version-skippers they would do so by not allowing skippers the earlybird price, so perhaps my numbers aren't a bad guess after all. But they're still hypothetical.

I skipped V7 totally. When I put my V6d serial nunber in the box for the $134 upgrade for V8 Pro, it went through with out any problems.
