Slighty OT: Applications to create layered graphics to use with DVDA3

I have V5/DVDA2 and am considering V6/DVDA3.

One thing that interests me is creating a menu using layered graphics (.psd file). Now I’ve read the DVDA3 manual, so I have some idea of what can be done from that. But I don’t have Photoshop, or any other application that supports layered graphics.

I see the full version of Photoshop is very expensive. Are there any “affordable” graphics packages that can create layered graphics that will work with DVDA? Or do I really have to get Photoshop for this?

Photoshop Elements is the entry-level affordable software from Adobe. Paint Shop Pro (formerly from Jasc Software - now owned by Corel) is also capable of creating layered graphics in the PSD format. Paint Shop Pro is also able to open existing PSD files with the layer info intact.

Ulead's Photoimpact supports this:

Photoimpact

It's only $90, list price. Make sure to get Photoimpact 10. It was a major upgrade to the earlier versions and has many features you will absolutely want.

Thanks - I'll take a look at these.

Has anyone created a menu with layered graphics - e.g. having "custom" buttons by defining these as a layer? What package did you use?
