Slow!

So far I think Vegas is quite nice and logical and prefer some things over FCP.
But, It seems to be slow and unstable.
It takes about 15 minutes to load my project (about 2 hours of .m2t)
And it has crash (had to End Task) multiple times today.
I have a fast system (2.8/1gig), but and am using XP home

Common problem? Anything I can do?

Unstable. I think this is the last thing anybody would ever put on their complaint list about vegas. I finished a project the other day that had over 30 tracks with over 500 items in the media bin. I worked on it for a couple of months and it never even hicuped.
There must be another reason for your encountered instability.

Somethin not right,,,,, one thing Vegas is and thats very stable.

What are you doing when it shuts down ? Same thing always,or ?

IDK - I'm looking to see if Windows has a update for XP. I have service pack 1.
Just getting slow performance - them eventually the hourglass to the point of "not responding"

Anything I can try?

once I remember I had a lot of problems in editing one MPEG clip. I tried to reacquire it and the problems disappeared. So in my case I don't know why, but the problems seemed to be related to the clip file!

If I am correct isn't a .m2t file a form of HD MPEG file?? That would easily explain why you are having so many problems.

What are your system specs, and what generated your MPEG files originally?
spaulgal wrote on 12/18/2003, 10:46 AM
Yes it is.
I was told that Vegas can handle them. It certainly imports them.
Can i resolve this?

2.8ghz 1gig ram
Working with .m2t files - HD mpeg2

I think you are going to have to give more system specs. Do you know what your motherboard is, what your memory is, etc?
Do you have a separate capture drive?
Is this a PC that you have worked on before or is it new?
Have you been having trouble with any other programs?

What's the data rate of the .m2t files? If I remember correctly, is 5-8 times bigger than miniDV. So you really need a well-tuned system to work with it.
spaulgal wrote on 12/18/2003, 11:33 AM
Actually m2t files are smaller than DV -- about 8.5 gigs/hour

The system is brand new 2.8ghz/800mhz mother board/ 1 gig ram
using a firewire capture device

Smaller, huh? What was I thinking about then m2v, perhaps?

This is footage from JVC GR-HD1U / JY-HD10U ?

The problem is that the files are in MPEG format, which uses temporal compression and includes incomplete frames that must be built up from surrounding frames. This process takes a lot of time and Vegas isn't very efficient at it. Yes, it can handle the files, but it will be very very slow. One solution is to convert the files into AVI, but then they would probably be way to huge to be useful. If you're going to be using these files a lot in their native form then Vegas probably isn't the tool for you.

... yet. There are some rumors that a native MPEG editing function may be added to Vegas 5. No guarantees, but it is a logical development, especially now that SONY Pictures Digital now owns the software. So, you may need to look for some other solution for now, but keep your eye on the next Vegas and give that a try.
