Slow motion

JB008 wrote on 12/10/2002, 11:34 AM
If I trim a clip that I want in slow motion, when I use the Event Velocity option I can slow the video down then I have to manually drag it to increase the length of the video to what I actually wanted. In other editing programs when you have a clip and you want to slow it down it automatically changes the length of the video clip. Is there a setting in VV3 to do it so it will increase the length of the video?

Thank you

Sounds like a good Product Suggestion!
Please send that to SFdry's Product Suggestion link, if you haven't already.

I'd like to see that feature, too --- as long as they still let me adjust the clip length manually, as well!

You can drag (stretch) an event while holding down the Ctrl key which adds a ziz zag pattern to let you know the event has been altered. Vegas has one of the best slow motion effects creating very smooth slow motion. Remember to resample the event you stretch. For example to stretch an event by ten seconds just split the event where you want to begin, than note the time on the timeline as you stretch and stop once you get there. Don't get much simpler than that.

BillyBoy,
I see two ways to resample, under Switches and under (event) Properties. Which one should be used for a slowed down event?

Far as I know it is the same switch, just two ways to get to it. :-)

BillyBoy,

I hear what you are saying. But my question is if I have a clip that I know where I want it to start and where I want it to stop, I have to manually do it by stretching it, it won't automatically increase the time; unless, there is something that I am missing?

Hi JB,

You might consider that Vegas makes a distinction between Events and Media.

Events are boundaries in time wherein media is exposed... sometimes also through filters (FX), and sometimes with speed altering, or both. But the event itself is the hole that the media is dropped into. Regardless of the rate of the media, the hole stays the same unless physically altered.

Almost like a measure in sheet-music that you can place any notes into; an event you can drop any media into. Velocity envelopes might be like 1/16th notes? Maybe not the best metaphor, but worth a shot...

I agree with JB. In the case when you are *stretching* the time in an event via a velocity envelope, it would be nice if Vegas provided an option to automatically adjust the length of the clip such that the start and end points that refer to the original media remain the same.

This would be most especially useful in situations where you're using EDL info from Vegas "Edit Details" to online in another system. All slow-mo event IN/OUT times currently refer to the frame addresses AFTER being stretched! Therefore, you end up with bogus SOURCE IN times that are often at addresses past the END point of the original clip at realtime! There's also no DMC framerate info to pass along.

Then again, a functional EDL export feature and media archive to tape would be nice too...Vegas can't compete with AVID and FCP until it can serve as a functional and useful offline tool as well as a finishing tool.

Moving the event end point to keep the same media end point would be impossible in all cases, since velocity envelopes allow freezes and reversals.

If you Ctrl+edge drag, you can change rate and event size at the same time, "fit-to-fill" can be done this way.

Well duh... how strange would it be if in-out times referred to something NO LONGER valid. ????? Of course they should refer to the timeline reference after you stretch. It would be BOGUS if they didn't.
