Slow render with color grading

MichalSt wrote on 6/6/2024, 2:31 AM

Hi,
I have a problem after upgrading VEGAS Pro Edit 18 to 21. In 21 when I add color grading to the video, the rendering time drops significantly. Without grading it's OK and just like in the old version, but even when I add a very simple grading, e.g. I just increase the brightness by 0.01 - it gets slow. On VEGAS Pro Edit 18 with any color grading the rendering speed was around 40 fps and CPU usage around 5%. On VEGAS Pro Edit 21 I have about 10 fps and CPU Usage is about 95%.

I tried rendering with NVENC, Intel QSV and the results the same. On different templates in MAGIX AVC/AAC it is the same. I don't paste screen shots of the settings because they are default. My computer:
Intel i7 14650XH
GeForce 4060
16 GB RAM

What could this problem be due to?

It's a known issue. VP 21 don't really use the GPU for this and other Fx with build 300 and newer. Try build 208 if you want to have performance more like VP 18.

It's not an encoding issue (NVENC, QSV) as it's a problem processing the frames before they get to the encoder.

Build 300/315 does have real performance and stability improvements decoding media, especially with NVDEC. So pick which is more important to you.

Thank you, it worked. It's only a shame that neither the VEG files nor the templates for color grading are backward compatible between 315 and 208.

It's still slow in VP22b93, using too much CPU - 32bit project

It is good that it uses all my CPU but in my opinion it's using too much CPU.

What is "too much" CPU usage? I've read posts where people have wanted to max their computer hardware out and wonder why it isn't happening.

@Reyfox you have 16core version of my 12core, I just noticed I have 60% CPU use unrelated to Vegas, a poor time to do a color grading benchmark. Will have to do this again when the other app has finished.

@Former user sort of hard to know what your computer hardware is since there is nothing listed in your user profile, nor do you have it listed in your Signature like myself. I went to your Profile to see what your hardware was. So how about listing it in your Signature? 😉

@Reyfox You make good points, and unfortunately Vegas 22b93 isn't using the resources available to it, very little difference after shutting down the background app.

32bit Color grading uses an extra 10% CPU raising to 30% and GPU power goes up 55watts which is considerable but not that much for a medium level discreet GPU. Anyone with medium to high end Intel CPU from 12 to 14th gen want to try, I figure if anything they may not drop frames?

Lack of response = plays smoothly for nobody?

My hope was that Intel was the key to smooth playback.

I think we're straying from the OP's issues again, testing a different version of VEGAS with different media and settings (32 bit).

VP22 restored GPU use for CGP so performs much better than 21.300/315 did. It's still clearly in the midst of engine improvements and I'm not sure 32 bit, esp. ACES are fully GPU integrated.

@RogerS It's the first thread that came up when searching about slow color grading, The OP's issue looks to be resolved until a VP21 Final is released. If you look to the games community they always speak about CPU driving the GPU, slower the CPU (IPC), slower the GPU use. Currently Vegas colour grading isn't making good use of multicore CPU so if that's the case, the Intel's might play that file, whereas my much slower (IPC) CPU does not play it smoothly.

This is not at all optimum, and will likely be fixed eventually, but what about you RogerS, 13600K + 2080super should be a good combo, could you give it a try?

After the disappointing 9000 AMD CPU reviews I think I"ll be going with Intel's new generation CPU's after it's confirmed they won't self destruct

@Former user I'd just start a new thread for new variations on an existing topic (VP 22 CGP performance and 21.300+ are very different, I did test that and use it in my own projects.) This thread is resolved and it doesn't seem likely there will be future updates to 21.

I can't do any testing with my desktop for a few weeks.

@RogerS I'd hope that's not true, that would be a terrible look for the company, even a special upgrade price to VP22 for VP21 users would be acceptable, reverting to VP21b208 isn't.
