You can scrub the playback by two methods.

1. scrub it with your mouse in the time line
2. scrub it with the scrub thingie on the bottom left hand corner of the event window.

But.....if you are trying to split the event - I wouldn't suggest doing it while the event it playing. Rather....hit your "enter" key to stop it approximately where you want to split...use your arrow keys to go forward or backwards to the exact spot...then hit S to split.

If you look at the wave lines of the audio file - you can start to get a pretty good indicator of where beats are - or other audio events that you can time to the video action.

I would also suggest (if you hadn't done so already) - pick up one of the other SoFo products for audio (Sound Forge, Vegas Audio, Acid) and start to play around with audio (very much like playing around with video). You will be amazed at the interface and how much alike they are. I have been a SoFo Audio guy for years - so bringing VV into my studio was a breeze.

Hope this helps.

Go to Options - Preferences to the Editing tab and change the JKL/Shuttle Speed to SLOW. Then use the "L" key to start playback. That should give you a steady speed.

Actually, there is a feature to do exactly what you want. It's the yellow triangle below the scrub control below the tracks. Drag it to a lower setting, or right-click on it and choose .25 or .5 -- now standard spacebar/enter key playback will be at that rate. This is a playback only control, it does not affect the final render. Double-click to restore 1.0x.

Actually what I like to do is use the keyboard. If you hit the "K" key and hold it then hit the "L" key for forward it plays it very slowley if you hit the "L"key again it gradually speeds it up for each time you hit the "L" key. It also works backwards if you use the "J" key the same way. I seem to get more control of it this way instead of having to use the mouse. It's also funny to scrub back and forth as this has given me hours of enjoyment, listening to audio in slow or fast motion ;-)

PS. you can split or add markers while doing the scrub with the keyboard as you wacth the waveforms slowley pass by too.
