Sluggish audio scrubbing

LarsHD wrote on 5/17/2010, 5:18 AM
I'm editing a CEO talking and talking and talking.

Scrubbing without audio works ok.
Scrubbing WITH audio is sluggish and the playhead sort of wanders away and drifts left right and only way is being very slow and careful with the mouse. This makes editing / scrubbing and fining my inpoints while *listening* to audio very time consuming. I sort of have to wait for Vegas and I can't work fast.

Is there something in preferences or something else I can do to make audio scrubbing work real time?

If you haven't, get yourself a Contour Shuttle Pro. I use this for scrubbing.

During scrubbing it appears to use the "Rate" slider. Since I've had the CSP, I don't use the mouse on the Playhead for scrubbing.

With the Contour Shuttle Pro, will then the audio during scrubbing be instant and not sluggish anymore?

When I audioscrub in Avid or in PPRo I can use my mouse and the audio is instant. How will the CSP make Vegas do it's job faster?

Form an ergonomic point of view I think you are right on, it looks like a nice product well designed for scrubbing.

Lars, using the original CSP here with 9e 64 bit - audio scrubbing is instaneous and speed is very controllable.

Wow, that's great to hear! If you disconnect the CSP and only use the mouse - does it then get sluggish again?

I have the Mice and CSP attached ALL the time. Why would I want to detach either of them?

Lars, just where are you going with this line of enquiry? I really am asking to find out if I/we can get you to where you want to be - what is it you want?

I'm trying to identify if there is a way for me to get instant audio scrubbiung in Vegas.

A. I grab the playhead not by the head but in the middle of the vertical line. I scrubb back and forth on a MXF-file. Video now scrubs fairly direct and not seriously sluggish.

B. I grab the playhead by the head, where if you move it it scybs with the audio as well. Video *and* audio. THIS is where the sluggishnes comes in. The entire scrubbing now becomes slower and "delayish" and sluggish.

I was given the advice to get a CSP. I'm trying to identify if this indeed will give crisper responsive audio scrubbing or if CSP only is a tool that will make scrubbing "nicer" and more pricise.

I asked what happen if you disconnect your CSP - and just use the mouse - does the characteristic of audio scrubbing then gets sluggish? I wanted to isolate what it is that is causing the sluggishness.

But.. hey I think I just discovered what is 50% of the problem:

I checked the prefs and audio devices and apparantely the ASIO driver had got switched over to Microsoft Mapper when I updated to 9.0e. This introduced a latency of around 250 ms. That's a long delay. I set it back to my ASIO driver which is set for 6ms latency.

This sped up audio scrubbing and gave a better feel.

However, it still isn't instant and 100% Avid and PP are still more direct and fast.

But it got much better. The remaining sluggishness I think is Vegas general sluggishness and oldness.. Lets hope next version is more resonsive.

Thanks for your help! CSP seems like a nice idea!

Do you have LINEAR SCRUBBIN checked in preferences?

That affects the way it "feels" too, but isn't related to "sluggishness" per se. There's a degree of sluggishness in Vegas but that's BOTH video and audio.

I think the long audio latency that I wasn't awar of was what made me react to severe sluggishness today.

But thanks for the "linear" tip as well.
