If by "smart render" you mean the ability to not re-render sections of video that are identical to the original, this only exists for DV. There is no smart render for HDV. Sad, but true. Same with MPEG-2.. Techically, it can be done, as Womble and VideoRedo have shown (and several freeware and shareware utilities).

Not true. Cineform codec AVIs (including Neo) have two modes of operation: VFW and Directshow. Vegas uses the VFW approach. If Cineform is captured with HDLink using the default settings, it will be captured using the Directshow approach and the resulting AVIs will not smart-render in Vegas. There is a tab in the HDLink options however which will force HDLink to convert and/or capture using the VFW approach, and if you check this tab, the converted files will be a little bit larger, but they will smart-render in Vegas just like SD DV clips. This is not a big deal quality-wise because Cineform is designed for multiple re-renders, but it does save a whole lot of rendering time since portions of a project that are smart-rendered are as quick as a direct file copy. I do this all the time and it speeds up your render time immensely.

Any Cineform codec that was rendered by Vegas is automatically in the smart-renderable VFW format.

Also, if you render anything to Cinefrom using Virtualdub, it will also be in the VFW format and will smart-render when it is folded back into a Vegas project. This is really cool when using VirtualDub and Deshaker in a Vegas project.

Really, really good tip. Thanks!

"Not true. Cineform codec AVIs "

But John stated that there IS smartrender for AVI... and the coineform intermediate is AVI.

John also said that there is no smart render for HDV (mpeg)... this IS true.... there is no smart render for HDV.

As i said in a previous post, I come from Liquid, and therefore hearing about "intermediate AVI" is unique to Vegas. You sure don't hear about it in Liquid anyway... because of liquid's HDV (mpeg) smartrender. There is no need for an intermediate. In fact, using an intermediate completely screws ones chances of a smart render occuring since the file has to be converted from avi over to mpeg (in HDV)

Sorry... don't want to cause a debate... I just wanted to emphasize John's words.... there is no smart render in Vegas when it comes to HDV (mpeg), and I truly think more people need to complain about this.

I have complained in probably 100 posts since the day I started posting (back then it was about MPEG-2, which is similar in structure to m2t HDV). Lots of good it has done ...

I moved from MediaStudio Pro a few years ago to Vegas and while I feel Vegas overall is a superior NLE SmartRender of MPEG-2 clips is one feature I do miss in Vegas.

I know exactly how you feel. I love the Vegas interface... one slick little puppy... what I can do on the timeline in Liquid, I can do in 1/2 the time with Vegas....but the mpeg render is highly inefficient compared to Liquid and I do miss it.
