SmartSound ordering question

Lili wrote on 12/15/2005, 5:23 PM
Hi - I'm just completing an online order for SmartSound and was ready to exit the checkout, when presented with a final question that I don't know the answer to.

It asks "What SmarSound enabled application do you use (choose one)?" This is followed by a long list of applications such as Pinnacle, ULead, etc. etc., and also "none of the above".

I use Vegas 5 - so is that a SmartSound enabled application? Not sure what to type here, except that there is also a box to check for "I do not know", but wanted to check with forum members first.
thanks a lot.

Vegas is not a SmartSound enabled application. They work well together, but not inside of eachother, nor set up for roundtrips between each other. If Vegas is your main axe, check "None of the above."

Thanks, but will it still work OK, or is there something else I will need to install?

Unless you have some type of engine for the compositions, ie pinnacle, the clips are pretty much useless. I think SmartSound has a stand-alone engine, music rendered if you will...

SmartSound is the only reason I have a certain pos loaded.

It would be nice to be able to use it directly (as a plug-in or media generator) in Vegas though. One of my wishes for Vegas 7 is a media generator that would include sound and music. Noise and 1k tone would be a good start. ;)

Just to clear this up seeing as how I use SmartSound.
No you cannot use it 'within' Vegas however that doesn't mean you cannot use it because you use Vegas!
You just render out to an AVI file, just a preview quality file is all you need, then open SmartSound and select the rendered video as your movie. You use their app to place markers, select music and change arrangments etc then you render the music out as a .wav (there's an option to render as 16/48K) and bring the file back into your Vegas project on a new track, Works pretty simply and there is some good help available.
Now what is a PIA is that SmartSound will not read markers from the AVI file or from the Vegas .sfk file etc, it'd be nice if it did but that's pretty much in SmartSounds court (I guess how to do this is freely available and not some silly Sony trade secret!).
It would be even nicer if one could do the whole SmartSound deal INSIDE of Vegas as one can do in some NLEs, don't know who's the fly in the ointment stopping this from happening. I hope it's not some silly idea that Acid and SmartSound are in some way competing products, they're not. I only use SmartSound because I'm a musical black hole but even if I wasn't many, many projects just don't have the budget for one to slave away creating an original work in Acid, the client just wants 'some music', usually I find myself using something from SmartSound as an alternative to what the client wants, pirated top 40 material!

I've been uisng Vegas for under a year and SonicFire pro for about a month now, so I'm nowhere near an expert - But what I find easiest to do (individual mileage may vary) is to use Vegas to tell me just how long a sequence is to the frame (between two and four minutes - best option for SFP to create a non-repititous piece) and then have SFP create an individual track of that length - I then bring the WAV file into the Vegas project and do whatever minor adjustments I need there (ctrl-drag resize).

If you need cut points for the music, then follow the above advice for bringing the video into SFP from Vegas (MOV works well for me) and then only exporting the wav file from SFP and bring that into my Vegas project.

Just MHO.

Thanks Bruce and Bob,

Looks like DSE had answered the question already, but I still wasn't quite clear until your detailed reply. Technical stuff eludes me, so I really appreciate your taking the time to explain. Now I get it!

Between Birdcat and Farss, that is pretty much what I do. I have no problem with SmartSound Pro V3 and later. I like the flexibility it gives me and generally find music that fits my vid without too much trouble. Actually, I find that there is, upon occasion, to much music to choose from. The slight variations that it can generate, even for the exact same length, cause me to spend some time comparing and deciding which piece of music I like best. Too much of a good thing.

I like the program, in case you haven't noticed. Even though it doesn't work INSIDE Vegas, it works well with Vegas. I expect that the company will continue to offer some very interesting innovations in the field.

By the way, when answering, if you have a place and the chance, don't forget to tell them what you DO use (Vegas). Without input about Vegas they are less likely to adapt their software to our needs in the future than if we asked that they include us.

"don't forget to tell them what you DO use (Vegas). "

Quryous - I agree - had already sent customer service dept. a message to that effect.
