Smoothing video

FCP and AfterFx have utilites for smoothing shaky video.
-Is there a similar function in Vegas and I've just missed it?

No, you haven't missed, Vegas does not have a deshaker. However, there have been lots of discussions about this function and several good solutions. You can start with this thread:

I do mine in VirtualDub. VERY powerful and free.
