SMS 10 won't split video at times

I am editing some raw video I took with my go pro hero HD camera. the video is flying in a vertical wind tunnel. I have a lot of video to cut out. Sometimes the split option is not available. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Sometimes I can split the video some times I can't . I'll move to another section of the video and I can split just fine. hhmmmmm

The event to be split must be selected.
Your timeline may just be slow to react with the GoPro video.
GoPro/Cineform provides a free conversion utility on their site.

I'm sorry to say all I had to do was select the individual clip... pretty stupid on my part. I had selected all of the video and guessed that I could add a split anywhere.
Will the GoPro/Cineform change it over to AVI ?

Here's the rules for splitting:

If nothing is selected, everything under the cursor will be split.

If something under the cursor is selected, only the items selected will be split.

If something is selected but nothing under the cursor is selected, nothing will be split.
