Snap, Crackle, Pop on captures with WinXP

HeeHee wrote on 4/4/2002, 11:50 PM
I have seen Posts already on this, but with a Delta sound card. I have a SB Live 3D and ever since I upgraded to Windows XP, I have been getting terrible audio.

They say to change the Computer setting in Device Manager from ACPI to Standard in order to remove the audio from sharing IRQs. Does this really help and not mess anything else up???? Will this resolve the noise on my current files or will I need to recapture????

Vitals:
Aopen MX34 (Via chipset)
Intel P3 933Mhz
256MB RAM
ATI AIW Rage 128 Pro 16MB
Onboard sound disabled
SB Live 3D

Ensure DMA is enabled on the hard drives and make sure you have the most up to date audio and video drivers

DMA has been enabled and I updated the audio driver last night from the native Windows WDM to the latest SB driver from Creative. Had noteable improvement, but I can still hear some crackle at higher volume, not nearly as bad though. This is by no means an SF problem. I Posted this because I like the response I get from this forum.

Try the George Breese latency patch too as it mainly addresses SB live issues (crackling).

JoeD,

This is a RAID performance fix. What does this have to do with Audio. I don't even have a RAID controller. I have ATA100 IDE with (1) 7200RPM 40GB Quantum (Master) and (1) 7200RPM 120GB WD (Slave). I have the v4.29 4-in-1 drivers loaded. Do you know if the VIA IDE drivers, that were also on this page, are newer???

Yes, I know...try the patch though. Ok?
You can uninstall it just as easily. It has solved some SBlive/Via crackles is why I post this.

you are also behind the 4in1s - you need to install 4.38 if you use w2k/xp:

JoeD,

I'll pass on the Patch, but I will check into the latest 4in1 driver.

FYI - I believe the problem is now fixed with a combination of updating the SB driver and upgrading to ATI MMC 7.6. This also fixed my Audio Sync problem.

I spoke to soon about this as well as misstating that I had the v4.29 4-in-1 drivers. I actually had the latest v4.37 drivers loaded.

Not sure why, but my audio got worse again with snaps, crackles & pops. However, I think I have narrowed down to a ATI MMC problem still.

After removing the Creative SB Live card from my system to rule it out, I enabled my onboard VIA AC97 audio and updated to latest v2.20 audio driver. The audio from the capture in ATI MMC was even worse.

I had not used the Vegas VidCap program since installing VV3a because of things I heard about it with the AIW cards, so I thought I would give it a try now. Guess what? No crackles. I have not captured a large enough file to see if the sync problem is resolved or not, but the short capture I did was right on.

I will keep you posted. Can't do a large capture tonight because I'm rendering a large project already.
