Snapshots...

I realize the JPG is a compressed file. that's Elementary. But the quality of the screenshots is really poor, even on the best setting. I have my EX-1 set at 1080/30P and I render using MXF files as recommended by a friend who has been using this camera/software combo for a long time.

I know there has got to be a way to get a better snapshot. In many of mine, edges turn out saw-toothed and look awful.

Cheers,

Your Project Properties need to match your media. If you bring 1080 media into a 480 project, the snapshot will be 480 pixels even with the preview set to Best/Full. This is a simple but specific procedure. You won't see "saw-tooth" with progressive media, so something else is askew.

I finally got a solution to this problem after browsing the forums here a few days ago.

Once I select the frame I want for my thumbnail image, I loop it, say from 3:20:32 to 3:20:33 and the render it as an image sequence and select the option to render loop region only.

I select TIFF (just because it gets me the best file) and render the one frame. Voila. crisp, beautiful, eye-grabbing thumbnail.

Thank you all who offered your suggestions on this.

Sincerely,

I tried your method and side by side just clicking the snapshot button gives me a more crisp image then doing the tiff render as image.
my project is 1440x1080 60i.
I didn't know you could do that though, so at least I learned something.

However, the image does show less grain but seems to be a little fuzzy, which might explain the appearance of less grain.

Hi. I do not have Vegas Pro 9 to do the render as an image sequence but I did loop a test second of SD video then rendered that as a .avi and got a screen save from that.
Next I got a screen save from the normal vegas process and opened both up in GIMP.

Upon zooming in 5 steps I could tell no real difference in the quality of the 2 images.

I will try this with some HD 1280 by 720 footage and see if there is any improvements.

I do have Vegas Pro 8.c

Thanks for the tip however!!

For Vegas Pro 8, you use Tools - Scripting - Image Sequence.
