So how's Vegas "POST"?

Rednroll wrote on 11/6/2019, 5:22 PM

Before Vegas Post was released, it seemed like there were threads being created on a daily basis asking when it was going to be released. Now that it's been released, I haven't read anything on this Forum about it. Is there a separate Vegas "Post" forum I'm aware of?

So how's Vegas POST living up to everyone's expectations? Good? Bad? Everything you hoped it would be? or fell short? etc?

Anyone care to show us any amazing things you've been able to create with these new amazing tools we're unable to do using VP17?

It is a more tightly Vegas integrated version "Hitfilm Pro"- works pretty well. You can, (for now) load only one instance at a time, and it renders back an adjusted file of whatever you're working on, and it takes into account the already applied Vegas effects (I think) , and if you want to "re-adjust" or do another "version" of what you might have just produce, (add them as takes if you'd like) that is easily accomplished as well, just do it again. It can take you back to where you were adjusting previously, or you can just start afresh.

To that they also add a fairly elaborate Photo editing Program. (that one requires Win 10, the "Effects" you can run in Win 7, though it is not "officially" recommended, but it works fine)

The nice thing about Hitfilm, though fairly complete, is you can add other modules, Like Mocha, for not too much extra.

There is not a "trial" version, as such, but you can get the subscription (get the month to month) and cancel within fourteen days, and you've not lost anything...I highly recommend that idea.

I just picked it up last week, though I've been ill for a while so I haven't had a chance to dig into it yet. I will do so soon and post some video tutorials once I sink my teeth into it and get familiarized with the layout.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

I am using Hitfilm Express, which is a cut down version, for free (the good stuff they make you order modules, which is cool, you can add what you want. So, you can try that as well, once you get past their "welcome" screen it's good, though it takes a while to load, it's its own programs, a complete editor like vegas, I'm going to guess Vegas will eventually get to a faster way to open that with Post.

Specifically, I've used their "beautify" package, for skin doctoring...and it's pretty good, and cheap, like $14....

If you've not upgraded yet, to VP 17, I think the VP POST "deal" at $21/mo for first year is a slammin' deal. With subscriptions, you get all the updates/upgrades for free, which is nice.

Also, keep in mind, the relationship between the two companies, and these two programs, Vegas and Hitfilm, goes back some years now, so they've got a lot figured out as far as tight integration.....That part feels pretty good, and even though it takes a bit of time to open, it's a lot easier than round tripping to After Effects or Davinci Resolve, which I've done as well, and this makes more sense. The do have elaborate color grading as well, maybe not the complete Davinci like, but it's boffo enough.

Looking forward to when you get the opportunity to make some tutorials. Being a Video editing novice, I really don't have an understanding of how folks use Adobe After Effects or Davinci Resolve with other editors such as Premiere and how you would move back and forth between your editor and these tools. So I was thinking for someone like myself with these tools being integrated within Vegas Post, whenever I get up to speed of what they do, then it may be easier for me to use them. I would like to stay within Vegas as much as possible, where currently Video FX plugins allows me to do this but I'm really scratching my head trying to understand what capabilities outside of what a plugin can provide that these Hitfilm additional tools add to the workflow. The only reason I've even heard of Hitfilm and BorisFX, NewBlue for that matter was because some of their plugins came bundled inside of past Vegas versions although I never used them and therefore my original understanding was that Hitfilm was some type of VideoFX plugin. I'm comfortable using Adobe Photoshop, but I have never used Adobe After Effects nor do I even know what it does. That's where I'm lost and seeing it in action would likely help me understand much more and how I could potentially benefit by having these tools. Therefore, I've been holding off on getting VP17 until I understand what Vegas Post provides and be able to make a more educated decision if Vegas Post is right for me or not.

Zdogg's description overviews were appreciated, but most of it went over my head where I kind of felt like I was in a Charlie Brown episode and just heard..."wah...wawp..waw..waw...wahhhh". 😄 I'm sure that's because an assumption is being made that most folks on this forum doing Video work understand what After Effects and Davinci Resolve do, but I'm definitely not one of them and likely need some videos tutorials to show me what they do that I can't currently do inside of Vegas.

Unfortunately, it isn't working for me right now. I had the dreaded registration bug, where post remained in demo version. I managed to get Vegas to register it finally by right clicking a video on the timeline and selecting "edit in post", but now Post crashes every time I try to open it, so I'm waiting on word from the dev team about how to proceed.

I did manage to whip up a really nice particle logo reveal for my company, Magic-I Media, however I have not been able to get it into Vegas for export yet. As soon as I'm in, I'd love to do some tutorials. I can say, if you have some experience in AE already, this pretty much picks up right where AE leaves off. As far as particles go, you have to buy $1k in Trapcode plugins (Form and Particular) for AE to make it do what comes stock with Vegas Effects, and furthermore, the effect in VE is easier to control, with fewer steps required to make it do what you want it to do (for instance, the atomic particles plugin automatically assumes the form of the video or image it is dropped on, whereas in AE you have to tell it to do that with an extra step).

A couple growing pains, expected for a new product, but I can tell once it gets working that this will be a nice, solid motion graphics production platform. I also plan on now doing a tutorial on how to do architectural video projection mapping using nothing but Vegas Post.

@fr0sty There is a bit of a tricky idea here to register. When the register window pops up, it will be pre loaded with your trial serial number, and most people will then, just click on through .....I certainly did, but there is a DIFFERENT number that you would check for in your email, and copy and paste the NON TRIAL version serial code, and that should get you through. Since you are already installed , you go to help and choose "deactivate on this PC" then shut down and re-open and you'll get the register pop up window again.....and do as I explained. At least that worked for me.

From there, it might take deinstalling Effects and reinstalling, (educated guess)....or maybe it works straight off.
