SoFo/MainConcept MPEG2 default "bug"

Hello All,

After having put in "much" study (on the Internet) on rendering MPEG files, I have also downloaded and read the MainConcept document from SoFo (don't know which version it refers to). This document, plus the program's "?" Help notes emphasise VERY strongly to not change any defaults unless you really have to or really know what you're doing (or both).

On the Custom>Advance Video page is a box labelled "Write sequence display extension". The "?" Help emphasises that this MUST be ticked for any MPEG files unless you *really* have a reason. So does all the other documentation I've read. Anyway, it's *never* ticked on any of the SoFo recommended defaults and you have to know about it and tick it yourself. As far as I can see, all the other SoFo recommended defaults are automatically ticked when you go to them and this is the only one missing.

So - if you are having any trouble using the default templates, this might be your problem.

I'm using Vegas 4.0c.

Regards,
Neil Porter

P.S. Now that I need to, I find that I can't type in a name for a custom template and save it. Anyone know how I can make this work?

Hmm... That's intesteting. I've burned VCD's, SDVCD's, and DVD's and never had that checked and everything worked fine. I wonder if that may be required in certain version of the mpeg spec, but isn't anymore (or was added).

For saving your custom template, did you click "custom", make your changes, then type in a new name in the"template" field? It will also only apear on the bottom of the list.

generally I've been making whatever alterations to a mpg2 template, type in a new name, overwriting the template name, and click the floppy disc icon to save, all in the custom dialog.

These values are apparently stored in the registry (from an earlier thread), so could it be some antivirus software for example is blocking writing to the registry, keeping this from working on your machine?

I rendered a new video with the box checked and noticed nothing
different from the old video.

Hmm... interesting. This option if unchecked (mine is by default too and that's how Vegas 4 installs itself, I've never changed this) can/could/may intefer with how some decoders in your set top DVD player resolves both the vertical and horizontal resolution.

So... when some people say such and such video looks like $#$(%$, this could be the reason, if in fact this is a oversight and this option BY DEFAULT should be checked and apparently it got through in version 4c anyways without being so, or so it appears.

Have to wait for SoFo to comment on this one.

Every time I click into the "Template" space, it just drops the drop-box selections down. I literally can't get into the template space to write in a new filename for a custom template.

Also, I do not have a disk-save icon at the top of the dialog box. !!!????

I really don't want to have to do a re-install but somethings weird.
