Try the Gradient Map. This lets you arbitrarily replace specific brightness zones with a different color. You can produce some pretty wild effects with it in just a couple of clicks. This is very similar to the sabattier effect (often mistakenly referred to as solarization).

The Threshold effect is a little more like a pen & ink illustration. It's not quite as spacey as Gradient Map, but it may be more of what you're looking for. Unfortunately Threshold seems to be limited to 2 levels, on or off for each primary color. I've seen some filters in photo editing packages that allow many levels and this gives a very pleasent effect like Posterization.
