Solid Red instead of Video on Event

DefcomDMC wrote on 3/20/2006, 12:23 PM
I have several HDV events in timeline that are represented with a solid Red color instead of video frames. What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Although it's red on the timeline, it's just black on the preview.

It looks like rendering out the section may correct it, but I have alot over 3 hrs of clips so this may not be efficient

I'm no expert but I found this happened to me when I was running low on Virtual memory...at least that is what my computer told me...I'm sure there is a smarter way to fix this but I resolved the issue by copying the veg file and pasting it on to a new page where I had nothing captured or in the media pool...works fine now..

I'm relatively new to Vegas, could you break that down for me?

Red frames usually indicate a corrupt clip or source media. Most likely it isn't corrupt, but a slight compatibility problem.

What are the properties of the clip, or one that is red on the timeline for testing? Aspect, size, etc. Be sure it matches the project. You said HDV - are they clips you captured? What method?

You could try rendering a short clip that is doing this back to the same resolution as the original clip/project, open in the same project, and a new project if necessary to see if that cures it.

The project aspect ratio is set to 1440X1080 at 23.976i fps. This footage is 1280X720 at 23.976i fps.

The footage was shot on a JVC GY-HD100u. I captured the footage into Vegas using Vegas' internal video capture application to .m2t.

Now later on in the project I have footage with solid red that was 1280X720 at 29.970fps.

How should I proceed?

First get your project properties set correctly.
If you shot 720p/23.976, then set your properties to those parameters.

However, sounds like your capture was flawed if you've got that many corrupted frames.
What are your system specs?

We get the same RED FRAMES in our project media if our servers get knocked offline by the vending machines... [seriously]

Now the only hitch is one of the SATA drives has been kind of flakey, as in if I reboot that drive may or may not appear. However, when it is recognized Disk Manager claims it's healthy.

I think DSE's assessment is likely the cause - when mixing media size in a project, it seems Vegas can show red frames, though I can't say this is the rule - just my own experience. This was the issue with digital stills I was using. I just assumed they would be resampled, cropped, etc when in Vegas, which they were, but I had red frames until I edited them all down to project size. Then everything worked perfectly.

BTW - you probably know this, but the replace media command in the project media window works beautifully for this - you can edit a clip offline and save to a new filename, then select the source file in the project window and "replace" with the new one - all instances on the timeline are updated. Huge timesaver for situations like this, although someone else may have an even better solution to recommend.

I would back up the SATA that is playing Houdini. Have you tried it on another SATA port to be sure it's the drive and not the port?
DefcomDMC wrote on 3/21/2006, 8:02 AM
It could be the port. These drives have never given me trouble before, but maybe it's their time.

I'm new to Vegas, so alot goes over my head thanks to a hefty manual =).

Where do I edit a clip offline?

Also, is there anything I should know about working with a project that contains media of different FPS? I hope it's do-able and no big deal.
