Hi,
I am intrigued by the idea of using a solidstate laptop for quiet audio recording, especially with such a device as a Mix-Pre D - from Sound devices which outputs to USB 2.0.
Any thoughts and suggestions for this idea and perhaps the name of a good model of laptop?
The laptop choice itself is of little concern if you will be using a USB interface. A nice size hard drive, long battery life, and a reputation for stability is all it needs.
As far as the interface itself, Sound Devices makes industrial strength solutions. If you will be looking at a firewire solution such as the Profire 610 (about half the price), you will also need an ExpressCard to Firewire adaptor, as very few notebooks/laptops come so equipped any more.
No, the laptop isn't noisy so judging by the comments here there is no advantage in using a solid state laptop. I will continue with my Vaio laptop. Thanks!
