The laptop choice itself is of little concern if you will be using a USB interface. A nice size hard drive, long battery life, and a reputation for stability is all it needs.

As far as the interface itself, Sound Devices makes industrial strength solutions. If you will be looking at a firewire solution such as the Profire 610 (about half the price), you will also need an ExpressCard to Firewire adaptor, as very few notebooks/laptops come so equipped any more.

A SSD could be good for recording, but still suffer from the big negative of limited number of write cycles beofre dying.

Is your laptop HDD noisy ? Noisier than the fan ?

No, the laptop isn't noisy so judging by the comments here there is no advantage in using a solid state laptop. I will continue with my Vaio laptop. Thanks!
