Solution to tearing in computer preview window

When viewing video that contain camera panning, I notice a significant "tearing" in the video. This tearing is visible in Vegas' preview window (on the computer screen), but if I switch to viewing on the external monitor (via Firewire) the video looks normal.

This was described recently by another user in this thread:

Vegas's Monitor Preview/ Refresh Rate/ and Overlay

For me, I found that the solution was to change the "screen refresh rate" from 60 Hz to 70 Hz. (This setting is found in Control Panel -> Display -> Settings tab -> Advanced button -> Monitor tab).

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 172T LCD display. My video card is the ATI Radeon 8500DV, with the latest drivers (downloaded and installed today, as part of my work to fix this problem). The display is connected via a DVI connector.

I didn't think an LCD even had a refresh rate, and I am not sure what this setting really does with an LCD screen.

I was able to change the setting back and forth between 60 Hz. and 70 Hz. The problem re-appeared at the 60 Hz setting every time, and disappeared when I changed to 70 Hz.

The resolution (Draft, Preview, Good, Best) in the Vegas preview window makes no difference: The problem happens even in Draft resolution, and even if the preview display is made smaller.

After making this change, there is still a slight, residual "tearing," but it looks more like the effect that you get when watching actual 24 fps film that contains a panning scene. I suspect that this artifact is due to the way in which interlacing is handled on the non-interlaced computer screen. It is quite minor compared to the original problem.

If Sony or anyone else has any further comment, or can suggest other settings that would also eliminate this problem, I would be interested in that additional information.

Hope this helps someone!
