I'm editing GH4 4K internal files which are bigger than HD but way smaller than other 4k cameras out there. I'm on the latest update for Vegas Pro 13.
MOST of the time I can playback UHD 29.97full speed in preview BEST/HALF with NO plugins running on it. I have a 4k monitor.
Crossfades are always choppy.
Usually, if I run the clip a couple times, it fills ram and runs better.
Adding plugins, things get choppy.
I have not tried the VEGAS PROXY thingy yet, but that should help a lot. Another thing I just discovered - but am not entirely sure about yet - is if I leave the PROJECT SETTINGS at HD 1920x1080 (even thought the clips are 3840x2160) I THEEENK it runs faster. Again, I have not fully tested this yet - it was a side affect while I was review clips... seemed to never get choppy, but maybe I just got lucky somehow

My system is: Intel i7-3770K 3.5 I'v pushed to 4.4, win 8.1 64bit, 32gig ram, 6Gig Titan graphics (not especially suited for Vegas as GPU but doesn't seem to hurt)

In my dreams, I would have the latest, fastest CPU (whatever it is this week), and whatever the best graphics cards - 2 or 4 of them working together. I bought the best I could afford at that time for around $3,000. Am confident I can scale back or proxy my 4K for full editing of it. I'm just getting started with it really.

ON my 4K trailer, it plays through choppy a couple times at 24p, then the 3rd one, 99% smooth all the way through. Here's pic of my tracks to guage the complexity or lack of

I have a 3930K running at 4.3GHz with 2xGTX580 and I also can't get native 29.97p XAVC-S files from my AX100 to play at Best/Full. Transitions are very choppy and more then one FX will bring it to a crawl. I use Sony EX1920x1080 MXF proxies via Vegasaur and it plays well.

I know of a user in here with the latest 5960X CPU and even that system is struggling. It seems there is no way around a dual Xeon setup if working directly with the 4K files is a requirement.

Proud owner of Sony Vegas Pro 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 and now Magix VP15&16.

System Spec.:
Motherboard: ASUS X299 Prime-A

Ram: G.Skill 4x8GB DDR4 2666 XMP

GPU: 1x AMD Vega Pro Frontier Edition (water cooled)
Hard drives: System Samsung 970Pro NVME, AV-Projects 1TB (4x Intel P7600 512GB VROC), 4x 2.5" Hotswap bays, 1x 3.5" Hotswap Bay, 1x LG BluRay Burner

I've been wanting to get into 4K with a GH4 purchase. My only concern is my computer's ability to make it worthwhile. The camera is expensive enough as would be a system to edit efficiently. I knock on wood that my 6 year old HP does a fairly good job albeit a bit sluggish with FX from Boris along with New Blue titler and the normal Sony stuff.

I have had success running all my 4k files easily with effects in PREVIEW / FULL (which, I think, are the best settings for watching footage due to the image looking almost 100% accurate).

My setup:
Alienware R4 ALX
Intel Core i7 4930k OC to 4.1ghz (6 core)
16gb ddr3 quad channel
1tb ssd
XFX Radeon R9 290 Double Dissapation 4gb DDR5 with 2560 stream processors
2x 1980x1200 monitors
1x 4k monitor

If the effects I add are able to use OPENCL, there is no slowing the playback at all. I would say the R9 290 and 290x are the best at this point for 4k playback in Vegas.

I have been saying this for a while now 3930/4930k and R9 290/290x is the combo you want for editing 4k footage. but people refused to believe it. So, all I am going to say is Good luck with your combo.

With all the new 4K cameras creating vastly different file types and sizes, isn't one best solution impossible?

At this point and time, it is best solution is to have at least 6 core intel cpu and the most powerful video card, in this case AMD clearly is the top choice for timeline performance for editing 4k.
