SOLVED Updated Neo scene crashing my Vegas pro 9

hoteldelta wrote on 6/17/2009, 8:32 AM
Yesterday I updated my Cineform Neo Scene from v130 b115 to v132 b117.

Then attempting to open ANY Cineform .avi file results in Vegas Pro 9 freezing and closing.

Prior to updating Neo Scene to v132, Vegas pro 9 had no problems opening and playing Neo Scene v130 b115 AVI files.

Vegas Pro 8 has no problems opening avi files with Neo Scene v132 b117.

So is this a Cineform problem or a Vegas pro 9 problem?

I have the latest version of Neo Scene installed and Cineform files open and play fine in Vegas 9.

I have noticed that my V9 "low memory" rendering problems are significantly worse if the source media was transcoded with Scene. I have this problem with both earlier builds and 117.

I've gone to using the raw mt2 files as captured. That has not fixed my low memory problems but they have gotten less frequent. I've actually successfully rendered something in V9 now as long as I don't use any FX at all.

I submitted a support request to Cineform on this last night though I don't know if it is their problem or Vegas' (I also submitted one to Sony).

I also get crashing in AE CS4 using Scene transcoded material but not in AE CS3 and put that in the support request to Cineform also.

Ed; good to know . What version of Neo Scene are you using?
Thanks,
Hal

Ed; I uninstalled Neo Scene v1.32 b117 and when I did that a Windows warning dialog box opened: Application; Au_.exe stopped running.

Hmmmmm! Some research shows that Au_.exe is part of Adobe Flash player. Why woud that be involved. It was in the user>local>temp folder so I deleated it and reinstalled Neo Scene v1.32 b117 and now Vegas Pro 9 runs Cineform AVI files with no problem.
Apparently the Au_.exe was interfering with Cineform and Vegas.

What version of Neo Scene are you using?

I am using Neo Scene v1.3.2 build 117 and the setup.exe file is Neoscene-1.3.2.117a-Setup.exe. I am using an Intel Core 2 quad 2.66Ghz 8GB mem running under Vista 64x. I have not had any crash problems with AE CS4 running Cineform files. Sorry, not much help.

Interesting. I have seen that Au_.exe issue a few times uninstalling NeoScene before installing a new version. Never could figure out what it was. Will make another attempt - wonder if that will sort out my other NeoScene issues.

Although AU_.exe sometimes is cited online as also being spyware, it is a legitimate program that is actually part of the install/uninstall package (NSIS, Nullsoft Installation Software, which is freeware & open source) used by Cineform on most, if not all of its products. Many other vendors also use NSIS, so it is a commonly seen file.

The spyware version replaces the legitimate copy, via visiting unsafe websites, etc.. Unless you note abnormal behavior by the version of AU_.exe on your PC (consuming system resources, "calling home", etc.) I wouldn't worry about it.

But the fact is - I did experience abnormal behavior, and deleting Au_.exe fixed the problem.

I have heartburn with install software littering my hard drive with useless bits and which often cause strange problems.
Install software should do their job and then go away - self remove.
No excuse for leftover install software.

Install and uninstall packages, for a given piece of software, share a lot of common items. Further, many installation packages allow options like "Modify" and "Repair" and need access to a complete installation package. I'm not sure that I like a bunch of installation "junk" hanging around either, but that's the reason that some vendors do so.
