Do you do incremental saves? I certainly hope so. Saving continually over a project can present a problem if that .veg file becomes corrupt.

If you go to where you save your project files, you will see one with an extension ProjectName.veg.bak.

You can try to see if that backup file loads correctly by removing the .bak at the end.

Move your original file to another location like the desktop before testing and having two files with the same name.

Thanks. I tried that but still the same problem. I can see the files in the project media and if I click properties on where they should be in the arrangement, the file number comes up. I do save every time I edit but often with the same name. Never had this problem before. The files (7 of them) are also missing in the arrangement, in the same position, on earlier saved versions of it

jetdv wrote on 3/17/2025, 2:01 PM

What do you mean by "arrangement"? Do you mean on the timeline?

Are the files still on the hard drive?

Are they just showing as "Black". What if you exit and restart VEGAS?

BRIAN-Gregory wrote on 3/17/2025, 2:30 PM

Yes, on the timeline, just showing as black but are visible in project media. If I right click properties in the space where the file should be on the timeline, the file name and info comes up.Tried restarting. Files are on the hard drive.

What is the version number of VP20?

When you start, is there an error window that pops up saying anything about missing media?

Can you provide a sample of the missing media in the cloud to be tested?

Can you provide a screenshot of the timeline with missing media and the Project Media tab?

I've seen videos turn "black" on the timeline. Exiting and restarting fixed the issue. The only time I've seen this happen is after an "undo". I know one way to duplicate it and have reported that method. Otherwise everything looked fine except that all instances of that video file were black on the timeline.

Version 20.0.411.0. It asks for one file but not the files that aren't playing. See screen shots. The image of the girl in the garden plays but then the next three files (6539-6541) don't appear or play, but they are in the project media. They were playing fine before yesterday. No idea why.

Have you tried clicking on the blue "S" in the track header? Why do you have the tracks "S"olo?

Was just trying things. I tried solo.on/off it makes no difference. Still got missing/blank files on the timeline.

From the first uploaded image, it appears that you are trying to preview an event from the Project Media window in the Video Preview window - if that's the case that is simply not going to work. To preview a video event from the Project Media or Vegas Explorer windows, you need to click the Trimmer window and then activate the 'Auto Preview' icon in the taskbar just above the Project Media and/or Explorer windows - the video events will then display in the Trimmer window (but not the Preview window).

@Dexcon That's strange because with all my VMS versions and VP21 clicking on a clip in the Project Media window plays it in the Video Preview window not the Trimmer. I never use the Trimmer window so maybe there's a setting somewhere?

Dexcon wrote on 3/19/2025, 6:19 PM

@EricLNZ  ... I was using VP22 and can confirm the result using another computer - clicking on a video event in either the Project Media or Vegas Explorer window will only display in the Trimmer window if the Auto Preview icon has been activated. I get the same behaviour in Vegas Pro 20.

However, Vegas Pro 21 is different. With Auto Preview activated, I get Preview window playback instead of the Trimmer window but only when selecting video events from the Vegas Explorer window. Events selected from the Project Media window only display in the Trimmer window.

And Vegas Pro 19 is different yet again - with Auto Preview enabled, video events in both Project Media and Vegas Explorer windows display in both the Video Preview and Trimmer windows.

I've no idea as to why there are differences between versions.

@Dexcon Interesting. I wonder if something has changed. Playing further with VP21 I find it depends on which window you have active.

With the Auto Preview button active and one left click on a thumbnail in either Project Media or Explorer windows I get:

  • If Video Preview window is active the preview appears there
  • If Trimmer window is active the preview appears there.

As I usually have the Video Preview window active my previews have always appeared there.

If with VP22 you can only preview in the Trimmer window then for me that is a backward step from VP21.

Reyfox wrote on 3/20/2025, 3:51 AM

For me, with VP20, Project Preview is in Preview window. Like @EricLNZ, I never use the Trimmer window. But in VP20, if I have the Trimmer active, Project Media will play there.

I have the same results in VP21 also.
