All looks good except for the DVD Burner (Sony Dw-U10a) I would go with the Pioneer A06 or 106 instead, they seem to be more stable.

Just make sure you turn hyperthreading on, and you'll have a screamer! If I had a little more money to play with I'd probably go for the P4/3.2 and 2GB of RAM. That would probably give you just a small nudge in performance, but would probably pay for itself in time saved within a few months. Everything else looks superb.

I'm using the Sony DRU-510A burner and DVD-A, seems to be a great combination for me. Pioneer also gets high marks, but I haven't used them.

What's the damage, Graham?

Looks sweet, Grazie.

A couple of thoughts:

Ditch the ADS Pyro Basicdv card. It won't give you anything the firewire built in on the motherboard won't do. If you feel a need to upgrade the firewire, the Canopus ACEDVIO will give you analog input/output (letting you preview to a PAL monitor).

Don't know much about the audio system on the Asus motherboard, but you might want to think about adding a 24/96 card. Echo (www.echoaudio.com) and M-Audio (http://www.midiman.com/products/m-audio/delta.php) make some good ones.

Monitors? I'd suggest a couple of 19" CRT monitors to go with that dual-head NVIDIA card.

Otherwise, looks like a screamer!

Nice machine. The Asus board is well-regarded.

How important is audio for what you are doing? The consumer speakers with that subwoofer may give you exaggerated bass.

If you want the cheapest upgrade for audio, the m-audio revolution is under $100. (don't know the exchange rate). It is capable of 7.1 sound and sounds really good. It exists somewhere between pro audio cards and consumer mp3/gamer cards.

Cheemie - What do you think I should be paying for something like this? It would be built for me by a company that deals with Premmi, and realtime boxes . . . . . Cheemie, I've got a quote and am bound not to disclose it, but if you wish to posset a guess . . up to you . . . tell you what, if you do respond to this . . I'll find a way of giving feedback here - yeah?

This machine could probably be built for around $1500, I would assume they would mark it up to around $2000 or so.

Grazie,

Sounds good.

I would look at at the FX 5200 card - I used to use a 5600 and they create a lot of noise compared to others.

What case is it?

Hiyah PAW - no phone call yesterday? Don't balme yer! - Anyways, the case . . hmmm .. . let me see . . .the "MIDI-TOWER EXTENDED ATX INC. 360W POWER SUPPLY" . . I can get a picture, or some dimensions of it. I do think it is . . .well . . BIG! PAW, what is a "FX 5200 card " ? I'm missing something here . . . . I'll be getting back to the company tomorrow . Yer wanna call me tonite? - Up to you . . .

I'm doing the $:£ conversion and I think I'm on track too! VAT bumps it up . . .

. . . okay okay okay . . PAW, the Nvidia FX 5200 - ah! Good point! Noise what noise with the 5600? I really can't see this company pushing out a "noisy" one . . . . . but, please tell . .

Oh yes there is the option for them to network up the DellBoy to the kit too! oooo . . . looks good eh?

Does anyone know how the Asus P4c800 Deluxe compares GigaByte GA-8KNXP ?

PAW wrote on 10/27/2003, 1:24 PM
Grazie,

I'll give a buzz later, wife is away at the moment and I have two screaming kids hanging from me at the moment.

Graphics cards have their own fan which is often small, if the chipset is being pushed hard it generates heat so the fan works hard to keep it cool.

Don't know about the 5200 but the 5600 fan was "a little" bit noisy, I mention it because we would all like a silent PC when editing and capturing.

I will look up the 5200

Asking about the case as some are better than others and it was the one factor I was getting stuck on when I looked at building my own.

Not sure what everyone thinks about removable drives - I have a problem with them. They will suffer over time i.e. the failure rate on a drive sat on the shelf for 2 years doing nothing rises a lot, its the mechanics - like leaving a car in the garage (not quite but not a bad anology).

Sounds good for moving data around but not for archive, it's cost effective £/MB but a solid media such as DVD seems safer to me even though it costs slightly more and is more messing about in some ways.

Have Fun, PAW
Grazie wrote on 10/27/2003, 1:48 PM
PAW - how are the kids? Really good points - esp. the nosiy fan thingy. Am I stuck on having removables? Nah, not after your comment - very valuable feedback. As to Box size - dunno. Will do tomorrow.

Thanks - Have a night off . . . ;-)

This looks like an excellent system for Video editing. I would have to estimate the parts at around $1500 as well. Try and get the Asus P4C800-E Deluxe. It’s slightly better than the regular Deluxe and only $4 more.

I just configured a system to your specs at www.cyberpowersystem.com and it was $1877 and that was with Corsair XMS Extreme memory. Without knowing the exact brand of all the parts, it’s hard to say what it should cost.

Here is an example:

Corsair Memory 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200-KIT Value Select $168
- vs. -
Corsair Memory XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, (Twin Pack) 1GB(2 x 512MB) 2x(64MX64) TWINX1024-4000 PRO Matched Pair .Retail $372

So both are 1GB (2x512) PC3200 from the same manufacturer Corsair but there’s a $204 difference! If you’re really concerned about getting what you are paying for would ask them to give you a parts list with manufacturer and model numbers. Any estimate could be off by several hundred dollars without that.

> Does anyone know how the Asus P4c800 Deluxe compares GigaByte GA-8KNXP ?

Very close apparently. According to Tom’s Hardware, the ASUS P4C800 Deluxe was their best mid-range mobo and the GigaByte GA-8KNXP was their best high-end mobo. The ASUS has better overclocking capability while the GigaByte has a few more features but they are both top of the line mobos. I’ve decided on the GA-8KNXP because I don’t plan to overclock so I went for the extra features.

Thanks for the tip JR. I don't plan on over clocking either. I did a price check and www.pricescan.com and www.pricewatch.com and the ASUS seems to be @ $25-$30 cheaper.

You Guys are first class - really! Such quick feedback.

I'll look into the "E" and the reasons why I'm getting an overclocking available item . .

As to prices I'm being directed by not only your good selves but others too . . . .

So you reckon I should be getting some real good Preview onto my analogue monitor with this baby?

Thanks,

PAW wrote on 10/27/2003, 3:07 PM

Very good, I would expect 8 frames per second on a simple cross fade between clips which is really good.

Grazie wrote on 10/27/2003, 3:10 PM
8f/sec - this is good?
PAW wrote on 10/27/2003, 3:25 PM
:-)

Couldn't help myself.

It will scream along.

Previews is what made a big difference for me on my last upgrade.

Rarely drops below an acceptable level unless I am doing really heavy stuff which you would expect.

Just wondered, what size/resolution is your monitor. I now use a 20" single screen setup which made me re-think how I lay out vegas on the screen (dual monitors never agreed with me) most of the windows are docked and the preview window at 524x288 for widescreen seemed to give a good balance on external preview (set at auto) between frame rate and quality.

Just a thought.

I am guessing now, without monitor, about £1000.
I purchased a machine 2.6Mhz , AO5. 512m, 120Gb fro 850 including monitor in march.

higher ? Lower?

Ho! That was aPAWling ! ! ! - I nearly put my fist thru' the DellBoy screen . . . . huh . . 8f/s . . . do you yer see me larfing . . do yer, do yer?

Thanks PAW, had my head up my rear end over the past week on this - needed a bit of a "reality" check . . .. . seriuosly though Previewsto an analogue should be good - yeah? And yes, Preivews are what it is all about for me. I'm finding that my creativity is now being hobbled by the hardware I'm running on. Anything more than simple trannis and "statc" text generated media and the setup shows its age - yeah? I want the NEW setup to give Vegas4.0d some more air to breath . . I've got some further ideas on what and how I wanna edit in the future . .. I need this proposed system to assist in this - yeah?

I like your comments on the single 20" - hmmm... makes me think . . . I do get my head trurned by these 2xFlatties - seems kinda kool . . but now you've said the single BIGGY . . well . . . And you've gone back to docking all stuff . . . I don't stretch the timeline .. tried that and have seen it on 3 x 17 inchers . . felt the thing was a bit of a "racecourse" event . . I like the t/l on one screen and the "garage" bits 'n pieces on the 2nd flattie with the preview over there too. Now, a 3rd flattie just for the Preview plus something else could be fun . . hmmmm . ..

Anybody wanna post thier preferred screen/s setups?

Cheemie I'll phone yer . . . .

. . too excited! It's now 4:30 am on a cold October morn' in London Town . . . can't get back to sleep . . . 1st cuppa tea . .

Thanks guys 'n gals

I have the ASUS P4C800 Delux in my 3.0Ghz system and I had a problem with the internal Firewire. I could not use the firewire to capture/previewfrom my cameras.

I disabled the on-board firewire and replaced with a Pyro Basic card and my problems were solved. Not sure if I could have fixed the problem with the board but I tried various things prior to giving up.

The only thing I have a small gripe about with the system these days is that my system boots with a nice helpful voice message loudly proclaiming "computer not booting from operating system"... and then it proceeds to boot just fine. ASUS have no idea why it does that.
