I use a Panasonic NV-MX500 and it cam record in 16:9 format. so I wanted to try this:

1. I record in 16:9
2. Capture in Vegas and then load the take on a track. it's 16:9 still...
3. I render I use the template DV PAL Widescreen
4. I watch the clip but the output is still 720x576. It looks like a normal 4:3 clip

What happened, it was 16:9 until I rendered and it seems the DV Widescreen templates are still the same output sizes DV 4:3

or ???

Since my goal is a Widescreen mpeg-2 clip how do I accomplish that?

DV Widescreen is the same resolution as DV so your output will still be at 720x576!
If you look at whats been rendered on a 4:3 TV everything should look squashed.

Its not a bad idea to include a shot of a circle at the start of 16:9 clips, in fact now that 16:9 is becoming more common wouldn't be a bad idea to do it all the time, all you need it a white card with a thick black circle, you can use the other side of the card for white balance. That way its easy to check that you've got the right aspect ratio when you bring it into your project.

Oh, by the way did you set the properties to 16:9 in VV when you opened the new project?
