Something Basic

Sargan wrote on 1/14/2010, 5:11 AM
Edited my first videos in Vegas.
Rendered them as PAL 720 x 576 MPEG2

Then in Architect, selected new ... pointed it to the rendered file ..
then used Make DVD ...
with option selected for stretch to fill frame and stereo.

Burned it ...The result is a perfect video, plays great ... but no audio ... not even any white noise .... zilch ?

Is there a step I have missede in the fianl project in Vegas sound is percet ..

Assuming you hear audio when you preview your video in DVD Architect -- have you tested the DVD on your computer as well as on your DVD player?

If it works on your computer but not on your TV's DVD player, it could be a problem with the media itself (i.e., a Memorex or other inconsistent quality disc) or an incompatibility issue with your DVD player.

First check to make sure there is an audio track within DVDA.

Second, what are the audio settings in the properties of DVDA?

When you render using a DVD template in Vegas, it does not include audio.
DVDA expects a separate audio track in addition to the video.

Render your project again, using an AC-3 audio template for DVD.
Then add that to your project in DVDA.

Just to clarify the audio is there in the final edit in Vegas.

I then used 'Render"

Just looked now and I have the Render as save type selected as "Main Concept MPEG2"

I selected 'Save As' ... "DVD Architect PAL Video Stream" and in the description it says :
"Audio: None
Video: 25 fps, 720x576
Use this setting to create a PAL video-only MPEG-2 file compatible with DVD Architect."

So that is where the error lies ...

I can see the option "DVD PAL"
that then gives options:
Audio: 224 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, Layer 2
Video: 25 fps, 720x576
Use this setting to create a PAL DVD-compliant MPEG-2 file.

So is this route I should go ?

No.

The correct procedure was stated in the post above.

1) Render a video-only file in Vegas using a DVD Architect template.
2) Render an audio-only file in Vegas using a Dolby AC-3 DVD template.
3) Import the video into a DVDA Project. If the AC-3 file is of the same name, it too will import automatically.

Hope this is clear. You are welcome to search the forums if you are interested in the details of why this is important.

Just to clarify a little more:
You can use the video MPEG2 file that you have already rendered. Just rerender the same project using the AC3 template and give it the same name as the MPEG2 render (except of course for the suffix). So you would have video.mpg and video.AC3. Make sure they are both placed in the same directory or file. When you drag one into DVDA the other will follow automatically.

I think I follow what you are saying but not the steps ...

Step 1 ... render video ?
If I use "Project > Render As"
The options I have selected under drop down menu for the "save as Type" is "Main Concept MPEG2"
is that correct ?

And under "Template" have chosen "DVD architect PAL video stream"
is that correct ?

This I assume would create me a rendered video file.

Step 2
I should then render a separate Audio stream ? ... what do I set in the "Saves as Type" and "Template" to save audio only ?

or am I way off here?

Save as type: Dolby Digital Pro. Default template.

There is the option if you choose, to add audio to your video. After choosing the template that you chose before, select 'Custom' then go the audio tab and tick the 'include audio' box. You can then name it, and save as a new template. However, that will be a standard stereo audio track - DVDA will convert to AC3 for you. I always render my file with audio, then create a separate AC3 file as well. Just feel happier having the 'whole' together. (Plus AC3 doesn't go back on the timeline in Vegas).

This answer has been given to you twice before.

2) Render an audio-only file in Vegas using a Dolby AC-3 DVD template.

Sorry, but I don't know how to state it any more clearly. This is also covered in depth in the documentation.

I am really not able to follow what you are saying - I appreciate you may be stating it clearly, but I don’t know how to do what you are stating.
What I read you to be saying is to :
"Render an audio-only file in Vegas using a Dolby AC-3 DVD template."
I have Vegas 9.0 if I go to Project > Render as
... there is nothing entitled Dolby AC3 DVD template. ???

Under templates the only options are :
Default template
SVCD PAL
SVCD NTSC
DVD PAL
DVD PAL separate streams
DVD NTSC Video Streams
DVD Architect NTSC video stream
DVD Architect NTSC widescreen video stream
DVD Architect PAL video stream
DVD Architect PAL widescreen video stream

That is all of the options ... there is nothing entitled “Dolby AC-3 DVD”

I did find that under “DVD PAL separate streams” it states it does create separate viod & audio streams, but no mention of AC3.

Can somebody explain how (i.e what options/menus) I find where to set it so as to render a video only track and then separately an audio track.

Only 2 small “Quick Start Manuals” came with Vegas & DVDAS .... and I have gone through these and cannot fins the way to do what you say I need to do.

Please bear with me .. this is the first time using the Vegas suite

I would bet that you do not have DVDA installed. I believe the license for AC3 is installed with that program.

"I would bet that you do not have DVDA installed."

Uh -- the O.P. already burned a DVD with DVD-A...
cbrillow wrote on 1/14/2010, 4:44 PM
"Under templates the only options are :

Yes -- those are templates for MainConcept MPEG-2 files.

Look in the box above "Template" , called "Save as type:" Click the down arrow on the right side of this box, and see if you have "Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio, {*.ac3}

Sounds like you're using Vegas Studio, so that's the choice you want.

I do have DVDA installed ... when I select new Project
I get the option then to selct AC3 (or PCM) but do not get the options within Vegas only the ones Listed.

Do I need to re-install something ?

When I then use "Make DVD" it does create DVDS that play OK .. but keen to know how to render separate files if that is better way of doing things.
Sargan wrote on 1/14/2010, 4:49 PM
... I did look in "save as" there are 19 file types, but none of them are AC3

I am using VEGAS Movie Studio 9
cbrillow wrote on 1/14/2010, 4:56 PM
You may have better luck finding help for this part of your problem in the Vegas Movie Studio forum.
Sargan wrote on 1/15/2010, 6:03 AM
update ... nothing wrong with what you were telling me to do.

Just there is no option to select Dolby AC-3, and I 'may' have found out why.

On Sony Answ 1105 it sets out how to do what you say .. but again I can't follow as no option to select Dolby AC-3.
Searched around and found a snippet by Sony for Vegas 8 that say Dolby AC-3 is only in Movie Sudio Platinum.
It also says to use PCM when you don't want 5.1 as quality is better, which would mean using WAV
I'll follow up with this on Vegas forum.
