Somewhat OT: Jumping in WMV8

I'm making a Multimedia presentation on CD. Using a menu on the side makes it possible to jump to specific seconds in the WMV8 file. On some computers that is. The reason I want to use WMV8 is compability, not all have 9. So it plays fine on many 'puters but on some I've tried with XP and WMP 8 it's impossible to jump in the video. All other links work fine, it's just the "seek specific time" in the vid thats faulty.

So I tried installing WMV9 codecs for the WMP8 player. It didn't work. Then I installed WMP9 and it started working ok. So now I have WMP9 playing a WMV8 file. It would be better to steer clear of any installation process for the end user.

Can someone please shed some light here. Why do I need WMP9 for this to work? Is there another solution to be found?
